To say I love you first?

In a new relationship and I am head over heels in love with him. It's on the tip of my tongue all the time and I just want to shout it from the roof tops. I feel like a teenager again and I love it!
I know he likes me a lot but not sure that he loves me yet. Should I just tell him I love him even though I don't expect to hear it back?
In the past I've always waited for the man to say it first just out of insecurity but this time round feels so much more intense and amazing and I just want him to know. But also don't want to scare him off!

Hi OP, I have very recently went through this internal struggle! I ended up saying it. I felt I was holding it in so much and I talked myself into saying it. I felt like it would be a brave thing to do, like I was being true to me. I also wondered whether it would be nice for him to hear and also help to pave the way for any feelings he wanted to express. I tried to prep myself for the not saying it back bit. I thought about my reasons for saying it, how it wasnt about putting pressure on us or having the expectations of him saying it back.

So, saying it felt comfortable and a bit relieving at the time. He didn't say it back, but seemed happy to hear it. He still hasn't said it and my resolve took a dip about a few days afterwards, when I did struggle a bit ( childhood issues came to the forefront that I had to work hard to not fall back into).

Overall, It's calmed me down, in the sense that I know he knows how I feel. I dont regret it. It's hard work keeping my validation on myself, if you know what I mean. I'm not putting any pressure on for him to say it, but it can be stressful. Relationships are at times.

Why do you want to tell him?

CatamaranViper · 12/07/2024 11:16

I did with DH. He didn't say it back for about a month.

Sycamoretrees · 12/07/2024 11:23

Sure you're in love with him? Could it just be that you are really loving spending time with him and excited to see where it goes?

Oldcroneandthreewitches · 12/07/2024 11:24

OP just hold your horses - this is infatuation.

Browniesandcustard · 12/07/2024 11:58

How long have you been together?

Girlmom35 · 12/07/2024 12:04

If it's that overwhelming and you're about to burst, I doubt it's love. It's infatuation.
Nothing wrong with that, it just isn't love.
I'd hold off until you know it's actually love before you shout it from the rooftops.

If you are sure, why not. Go ahead. Don't expect him to say it back, but be honest about how you feel. At least you'll know if you're on the same page or not.

How long have you been dating?

I would avoid saying it in the 'honeymoon' period where you don't really know each other that well. Wait until you've been through some challenges together and get a deeper sense of the person.

You can always just tell him you love spending time with him.

Have only been dating two months but know him very well as we were good friends before. I've had feelings for him for a while...

my 3 longest relationships (22yr, 5yr and 1 yr) I have said it I think within the first month. In my last one it was 3 weeks. If it’s right it’s right and there is no set time. We all work at different paces.

the way i said it, was that we were chatting about the 3 weeks and I said “I think I am falling in love with you” to hedge my bets. She said same, so I then said that I already am in love. Was fine.

S/he who says it first loses power in the dynamic. Cool your jets for now.

Whyoohwhyohwhyyyy · 12/07/2024 14:54

I don't think you should say it unless you can be 100% sure he feels the same way and will say it back.
I've been there in the early stages when I was absolute desperate to tell him but I stopped myself. I'm SO happy that I didn't say it because after a few months he turned out to be a bit of a dick/narcissist and it would have been a big mistake to give power away to him. Let things settle and don't give it all away so soon.
