Just wondering what your experiences are… and preferences… both good and bad!!
disclaimer: this is a light hearted thread so please, let us agree from the start that I’m not trying to stereotype anyone here… promise!

Is this for the Daily Mail?

What a strange thread. Yes of course it's going to be based on some kind of stereotyping or commonality, otherwise I doubt you'd find the responses amusing!

She probably means the comparison between different countries/ cultures, and she states it’s light hearted…

But let’s get our knickers in a twist regardless…

YellowLeavesGreenTrees · 11/06/2024 19:49

I wish they would visit the dentist more often. It’s hard looking at manky teeth. The British teeth episode on the Simpsons is not a stereotype! (I understand this is hard though due to how difficult it is to see an NHS dentist).

ThisIsaNiceDress · 11/06/2024 20:00

Yeah I was worried about the potential of everyone getting their knickers in a twist with this thread… so thanks for getting it out of the way early @EarthSight ☺️☺️
I’ll start… good old fashioned etiquette seems to be more of a thing amongst (some… now I feel the need to qualify anything 🤦🏼‍♀️)…foreigners… in my humble experience!

And if there is a commonality, is it really a stereotype? (but that’s a separate thread I guess!!)

It's a stereotype.
What do you mean by "old fashioned etiquette"?
Opening doors?

ThisIsaNiceDress · 11/06/2024 20:06

Yes. Opening doors. Bringing a small gift when you arrive at someone’s house, and removing your shoes… 🤷 making a bit of an effort for a date… complimenting the woman… and god forbid, offering the better seat at the table in a restaurant, or offering to pay for dinner…
im ready to be shredded to pieces next 🤣

How many Englishmen have you dated v "foreign" gentlemen?
I'm just wondering how big the sample is.

Invent · 11/06/2024 20:11

How many people do you lot date? I'm 50 ish. I've had 3 proper boyfriends, maybe two casual ones and 10 -15 one night stands of which one was Middle Eastern and one South African.
No idea if there were any similarities or difference due to where they came from.

TheBestFriend · 11/06/2024 20:14

The drinking! Was just chatting to my French friend about it earlier.
I haven't met/dated men of other nationalities for whom drinking is such an important part of everyday life (every evening after work, weekends), but have recently met a few English guys with whom that's a big part of every activity! E.g. cinema trip, chilling in the house, shows/theatre, travel, going out... Pretty much everything apart from breakfast!

Invent · 11/06/2024 20:15

Oh actually never met a circumcised English guy. Both my foreign guys were. No idea ...er..how it worked without the skin.

Everything but breakfast… brilliant 😂

@Corinthiana I’d say a few more foreign gentlemen than Englishmen but the overall sample probably not large enough to support an academic research paper admittedly 😅😁

@Invent what do you mean when you say you have no idea how it worked? Didn’t you say they were your one night stands? 😅

Shame. I was hoping for something peer reviewed.

That's so interesting cos two of my white, British as it gets for generations, non religious boyfriends were circumsized (health reasons)

CaptainOliviaBenson · 11/06/2024 20:59

Everyone I've dated has been an Englishman (or English boy really, been in the same relationship since I was 16). I've nothing to compare them to.

SallyWD · 11/06/2024 21:10

I've lived abroad twice and travelled a lot and I actually really like English men. I like the humour, the self deprecation. Compared to some men I've met from other nationalities many English men know how to behave and not be overtly sexual/flirtatious (obviously there are many exceptions and examples of bad behaviour from English men!). I had a work night out recently and some of the southern European men were being very flirtatious - discussing a colleague's beautiful body and asking her to take her coat off so they could see it better. The English men were very shocked!
Having said that I ended up marrying a foreigner! The one English man I had a longterm relationship with was an idiot.
