Anyone else damned to not make it and did?

trying to keep this light hearted and happy. Me and partner are getting married in 2 weeks. We’ve been through a lot and feel very lucky that it brought us closer.

we were a real ‘they’ll never make it’ couple but we always knew we would.

suppose I just feel 99% happy and 1% feck you to those who thought we wouldn’t make it and now we’ve our home, our baby and very soon, our marriage.

anyone else experienced this?

No, but my parents were told 'I give it six weeks' by lots of friends and relatives at the time. Sixty years later...

Congratulations! Hope it all goes well.

What were the reasons people thought you wouldn't make it as a couple?

It's a bit odd that others would be that bothered either way.

14 year age gap, I had no intention of settling down before I met him, neither did he.

we both come from small communities in a rural part of the country so everyone knows everyone and everyone’s business kind of thing. We were the local gossip at the time.

Was one of you very young when you first met?

Mrspepperpotsskirt · 01/06/2024 23:03

👋🏻 25yrs. First meeting of parents (married before telling dh family for good reasons) mil asked my dm ‘ how long do you give it’. Think she’s still waiting 😅

How long have you been together?

Meh. I thought you were going to say you were 17/18.

24 and 38, not even my small narrow minded hometown would have much to say about that for more than a couple of days.

TheGoatgotout · 01/06/2024 23:10

Us…23 years married in December. My husband was originally from an Eastern European country, so OBVIOUSLY he was an economic migrant just after a passport (thanks parents who didn’t attend our wedding).

18 yr old and 19 yr old DDs, a house bigger than anything parents ever lived in, paid for by DH, overpaying mortgage to enable early retirement and a home somewhere hot with our own pool.

Fuck you, doubters 😊😬🕺

Maybe op is the older one of the pair?!

ChrisPPancake · 01/06/2024 23:15

And us btw. Met at uni. Parents were very unsure. They've got used to him now, nearly 30 years later!

My dad was a Displaced Person from Eastern Europe. Mum and Dad were married 52 yrs.

There was a bigger age gap between DH and me than the one between the OP and her DH. We were married 27 years.

I think it's that "rule" about age gaps - half your age plus seven - that makes people doubt.

Good for you, you proved them wrong!

My late wife and I got married when I was 19 and she was 17. One of my uncles said he gave it a year. (I often joked I should have listened to him Grin )

When my wife passed away in January we'd been married for 47 years.

We were 36 and 40 with 7 DC between us. He had full custody of his 4, both our youngest were 3. We all moved in together after 3 years. Everyone said we were mad and it wouldn't last. That was 23 years ago!
