Boyfriend's text me but it wasn't his number

On normal text messaging he text me but was a completely different number. I asked whose phone he was using, he said it was his. I said it's a completely different number. He couldn't understand why. Any reasonable explanation for this? It was definitely him.

The only thing that makes obvious sense is that he has a dual SIM phone and accidentally messaged from the other SIM. I don’t even know if that’s possible to do accidentally.

Notaboutthebass · 27/05/2024 12:55

Thank you.
He says he doesn't have a duel sim.

I have had this very thing happen with my phone and have no idea how or why this happened but it was my text

Roseshavethorns · 27/05/2024 13:02

This happened with my son's phone. Came up as some random number when he called. No idea why. I was more shocked that I answered it to be honest as normally let unknown numbers leave a message.

Bobbyelvis4ever · 27/05/2024 13:03

This has happened to me too - although I was the sender. It was super confusing, but sorted itself out.

Thanks. So not when you've just changed your number or anything, it was completely random?
He hasn't changed his number or phone at all.

This happened to me, turned out he had a secret phone for messaging other women.

kcw000telford · 28/05/2024 14:53

I would think he's lying. It's either a dual SIM or he's spoofing the number.

RubySloth · 28/05/2024 14:57

What phone has he got? Then it will answer your question on dual sim but as others have stated it has happened to them for innocent reasons, is there a reason you distrust him?

DrJonesIpresume · 28/05/2024 15:00

This has happened to me when I got a replacement phone. I was given a new number for a couple of days and they then switched it back to my original number. Even several years later, I was still getting friends telling me they were getting messages from both numbers.

FooFighter99 · 28/05/2024 15:02

Something similar happened to us when we bought DD her first phone/sim with Sky Mobile

I couldn't text her android phone from my iPhone as the texts were delivered to some random person who would then message me back and get angry at me telling me I had the wrong number (definitely wasn't DD) - yet her dad could text off his android phone.... it was weird!

Sky couldn't explain it and, as she was only 11 at the time and we were worried about strangers messaging her, they cancelled the original sim and replaced it. It's been fine since

Sometimes these weird glitches do happen

FooFighter99 · 28/05/2024 15:04

Oh, and sometimes, when I ring/text my mum it shows my number instead of my name, which is also bloody weird and unexplainable! Bloody technology

TheTartfulLodger · 28/05/2024 15:04

This can happen randomly. It doesn't have to mean he has a secret phone or is cheating. In spite of what some people will tell you.

@Notaboutthebass - this happened with my Mum's phone too

Notaboutthebass · 28/05/2024 16:43

Thanks everyone.
So he was trying to get to the bottom of it yesterday and said it was bugging him, showed me his phone and that it has one sim etc. He text me again whilst with me and it showed the same number (not his), I also called him (using that number) and it said 'invalid number' yet he was able to send me a valid text message right next to me.

My Daughters phone does this and she has no idea why.

ThankGodForDancingFruit · 28/05/2024 21:08

Get him to call his network provider.

It sounds like something called ‘split service’, which happens when a number is transferred (used to be called ‘ported out’).

I used to work in the Tech team of a network provider, and occasionally numbers would be ported out in error, usually one digit wrong.

So it can happens when there is sim swap sometimes, when some services transfer corrently and rest is corrupted to due system fault. I had issue before with one company number. Despite many attempt to transfer number to new sim due to strange behaviour, part of it was still staying active on original sim. We could not resolve it with support of mobile phone provider and decided to cancel the number due to security

Wellwhatsthis · 28/05/2024 22:02

Is it an iPhone? And are you with Apple?
This happened to me - I could receive texts to my actual number or the mysterious one, but texts I sent came from the mysterious number only. I think it was the number on a new Sim when I changed phone. I used it for a day or two before my number ported, and in that time I registered it with Apple.
It only happened between iPhones, not android phones so I was able to work out it was related to my Apple ID. Logged into Apple account and there was this odd number.
Managed to change it (took a few hours but I can’t remember why - I had to google how to change and it looked like it wasn’t going to work for some reason and then it was all sorted).

Pyaar · 29/05/2024 00:00

This happens to me too. When i use normal texting with someone it defaults to using this other number weirdly, i have to go into the chat settings (i.e. Settings of the conversation itself not general SMS settings) and select "SMS" as it seems to use something called RCS chat. See attached pic.

Once I've done it the settings are saved for that contact but a new convo with someone else it will go back to RCS.

No idea what it all means but hope this helps.

This has also happened to me - never figured it out

helpmehelphimplease · 29/05/2024 00:20

Has happened to me. I changed phones and someone said they got a random number come through from me. Most people get my actual number but a handful get this random number. Some get both!
