Opinions please

Not dating, but lots of message exchanging and calls with close family friend. I do like him a lot and he does give signs that he likes me too.
We've met a few times for coffees away from the family and we just laugh the whole time. It's lovely. Then we had plans for Saturday night together. He invited me to drinks. Once I said yes, he suddenly went silent. He normally messages me morning and night. Nothing all week. Then on Saturday morning a list of 100 excuses why he couldn't meet me. All maybe valid but I can't tell.
He asked about next Wednesday and I said no how about Saturday- but he finished the chat talking about how much work he still has to do this week. No confirmation.
I won't call him now, but what do I do when he calls or messages me?

Maybe he got cold feet?

I'd give it one more chance, but if he bails again then that'd be it.

I'd send a message saying it's clearly not going to work out, good luck. Blah blah.

Thanks @MMadness I just realise now that I'm probably reading everything into this and he's "just not that into me" 😃
I just know he'll be back for platonic friendly messaging, but I'd already let it move into something else in my head. Or almost something else.
Normally I answer him when I see the message, now I think I should leave it a day or two. Hopefully it will just fizzle out. He'll realise he doesn't need to stay in contact with me for polite reasons or whyever he does.
