Babysitting

I am a single parent, my oldest child is 12. Ex doesn't see or have contact at all. I would like to start dating but haven't been able to due to lack of childcare (no family willing to babysit) but it's surprised me that a few people have said I should leave my 12 year old to baby sit for me to date?! First of all I think this is far too young and I don't feel comfortable leaving him to babysit two younger siblings, I was waiting till he was around 15/16 before allowing to babysit but a few people have told me I'm being silly and making excuses and children can be left home alone from 10 apparently? Not sure where that rule comes from as haven't heard a set age and implied that I haven't raised him enough to be responsible as a responsible 12 year old should be able to babysit younger siblings apparently, Whilst I would happily leave him alone to nip out I wouldn't leave him to care for 2 younger siblings and to date just doesn't scream great parenting to me and seems a bit irresponsible! Am I wrong for NOT leaving my 12 year old to baby sit?

You are not wrong, at all. I completely agree with you.

I agree with you too. I would not do this either.

much to young to be responsible for the younger two

Definitely too young maybe in 3-4 years? Could you hire a babysitter?

Thanks all as I thought! This wasn't a UK group so maybe other countries allow it from a lot younger? I know countries in Europe kids have a lot more independence (heard of 6 year olds going to school alone) but that isn't really acceptable here so maybe that had something to do with the responses. Also a lot of people that were left to babysit 3 kids at 12 in the 90s but I would say times have massively changed since then! And not a bad thing..
