If you have a close relationship with your mum, what makes you close?

I often see women describing their mum as their best friend – in fact this post was inspired by a friend of mine saying that if she were invited to the Oscars she would take her mum over her husband – and as much as I love my mum, I can't really relate to that at all.

I have a 6 year old DD and I would love to foster a relationship with her which flourishes into adulthood. If you're really close with your mum, what do you think she's done to encourage that closeness? What is it about your relationship that you value so much.
