I'm 44, I haven't been on a date for years, I'm planning a coffee date and I have no clue what to wear. Was thinking something like this, perhaps with denim jacket, but is it too much for coffee? Any suggestions welcome, I'm 5'3 size 10-12.

Wear the dress ! you like it and if its comfortable then go for it. I think it would be great for a coffee date and you can wear it again when shopping or going for lunch with friends. Enjoy your date 😀

Ch4ng3dn4m3 · 20/02/2024 18:43

Thanks so much for all your views. There are clearly 2 camps, I now have to decide which look to go with, but I have just under 2 weeks and I don't think I can decide anything until the dress is here. It may look hideous so be totally out.

No to the skinnies. That is very dated.

newnameagain1976 · 19/02/2024 20:16

I don't like it, sorry. I'd go with wide leg jeans, trainers and a nice jumper. Is it a day time coffee?

Ha ha the Levi's ad with wide leg jeans and a nice white top was directly above your post for me 🤣

EveryOtherNameTaken · 20/02/2024 19:14

If your date isn't until 2 weeks, I can't imagine how many times you'll chop and change your opinion 😂

BlueGrey1 · 20/02/2024 19:52

I personally wouldn’t wear doc martens on a date, I would go for a more feminine shoe

It’s very hard to make a suggestion as to what might suit you without knowing your body type
I personally wear a nice fitted pair of jeans, a nice top and shoes and then make sure my hair and makeup are done well, I prefer to be semi casual though

Mementomorissons · 20/02/2024 20:03

I agree with pp's that you should wear the best version of your normal style, but imo the wide leg jeans and a top suggestions are surely for coffee with friends and not 'coffee with someone I want to want to fancy me'. So I'm voting for makeup, dress and a little bit of flesh!

Catsandcuddles · 20/02/2024 20:17

Go with what your normally wear, otherwise you will just feel uncomfortable. The dress you have ordered is absolutely fine for a coffee date with a casual jacket. Hope the date goes well!

I missed that memo, but as they look fab on me I will continue to wear them lol.

I mean a lot can happen in 2 weeks, I may not even be interested in having coffee with him by then.

The dress is lovely for a coffee date.
Much much better than the suggested jeans etc

DoYouWantToStartACultWithMe · 20/02/2024 22:39

Skinnies will never die for me either, my legs and arse deserve better than being encased in baggy jeans, they're by far the best bit of me since I lost a lot of weight 😁

Ch4ng3dn4m3 · 20/02/2024 23:08

@DoYouWantToStartACultWithMe you know they'll come into fashion again before long, then we'll be like trend setters lol.

I love the dress. Hope it’s nice on.
Wear whatever you feel like yourself in.

Loubelle70 · 21/02/2024 13:00

I love the dress.
I always dress up for dates...not stiletto style but clean, groomed, classy.

ShiveringMeTimbers · 21/02/2024 13:32

Any man who thinks I look 'dated' walking in wearing skinny jeans or unfeminine for wearing DM-style boots can fuck right off frankly.

I haven’t worn jeans for about 25 years since Levi’s stopped doing Ultra Curve as they’re the only ones I’ve ever found that fitted me properly.

However I definitely think skinnies look better than the wide leg ones on the first page. Maybe be an age thing but they just look too casual and a bit scruffy to me.

Besttobe8001 · 21/02/2024 13:57

On a first coffee date I always wear something very similar to my day to day. If he doesn't like it, he's not going to like me. It's a second dinner date where I'll get dressed up all fancy.

Coffeeandtveasily · 21/02/2024 14:20

Some of these responses are hilariously Mumsnet - don't wear a dress! Just chuck your jeans on.

Lauz841 · 21/02/2024 14:58

No skinnies? Since when? Skinny jeans, heels and a cropped leather jacket are my regular go to. I feel like I've been walking around in a bubble now! 😩

Skinnies live forever. Ignore the haters 😁😁😁

Arghhhhhhh.
I've ordered the dress but that doesn't matter because I like it and it's something I'd wear anyway, but maybe not out to coffee with my mate, so now I'm having serious doubts about wearing it for coffee with a man. But that's why I posted because I've not been out with a man in years and I don't know what to wear, so I really appreciate all your suggestions. I'm now thinking something like this but probably with doc martens rather than a heel. Thoughts please

This look is perfect. You're stylish but not looking like you tried too hard.

I haven't read the full thread but as someone who started a new relationship at 39 I wish you the best of luck with it Flowers

What a strange response, for a start not everyone likes to wear jeans. It isn't like she's picked a fancy bodycon and stilettos, it might not be to everyone's taste but there is absolutely nohing wrong with a casual dress for a coffee date.

Edited

The dress is great, what I mean is that acccording to Mumsnet somehow dresses are too much (??) and jeans will do. Not all responses but it's very typical of Mumsnet to have an issue with a woman wanting to dress up nicely in case they are to be "too ott"
