Advice on social housing

So I've finally left my husband 3rd time lucky. Due to many reasons coercive control, threatening suicide "attempting" suicide for attention & a life of hell. I've got 2 kids DD 12 & DS2. I've gone to my mums but we're all staying in one bed. She's ill so I do feel bad but I have nowhere else to go. Didnt own the house i lived in and tenancy in his name. So I am going to apply for social housing (before anyone starts I know it can take upto 10 years wait) can take upto 50 days for them to accept me on list. I just want to know what it means on website it says on "great places housing association" homepage please look on homesearch for the area you live in as were all combined and view "homes available now" you don't need to sign in register or bid you can phone the landlord?? They are SH houses not private. But when I've looked it says please register & bid? How does it work why could someone simply phone up and enquire rather than wait on a list for years. Doesn't make sense. Anyone have any insight?
