That's awful- my 17 year old son managed better than that- some lovely posh chocolate (which I love), air freshener for my new used car which is a bit damp smelling and some black mascara. I was very proud of him!

pavementmutation · 25/12/2023 17:50

No, op, sorry, I think @ADesignForLife 's DH claims the award.

(I forgot what thread I was on.)

My friend (a man, 30yro) has received ladies handbag (big tote bag with a long strap) from his mum. She thought it was a toiletry bag.

To be fair, socks & a mug are hardly exciting gifts

Can someone tell that to my ex? My son is 4, and I think I've had 5 mugs from him so far

Spencer0220 · 25/12/2023 18:01

My friend got me a charity shop top that has multiple pulled threads. Size is totally off, but I hadn't seen her in 3 years, so not surprised.

Also a random tiny battery powered set of lights that has clearly been damaged.

Luckily she wasn't there when I opened them because I bawled. I spent weeks picking multiple gifts over the years for her and her daughter.

I feel so unwanted by her

Aftershave, socks, a card, a mug, some nice bits

I Would gladly receive this sort of thing, if the mug was good and the nice bits really nice. I love getting socks for Xmas.

OP yours was really bad, commiserations

MIL gave DH (ie HER OWN SON) testicle moisturiser. I couldn’t look him in the eye when he realised what it was.

Edited

What the hells the point of moisturising testicles anyway?! The best moisturiser in the world won’t improve on the sad octopus look

Spend the time and money on yourself next time.

I’ve made it very clear I will be having nothing to do with it. The instructions on the back are even worse 😳

HowDoYouSpellThat · 25/12/2023 18:25

I got nothing from my dp of 10 years. We'd agreed to get each others things we can do together, so i got gig tickets and a special film screening. He didn't organise anything. Nothing.

NeverForgiveMyself · 25/12/2023 18:26

Socks (5 pairs, walking) from husband. I got him a noise meter (he wanted) and a photo book (of our renovation). So I had thought about presents and he hadn't.

However today he fixed the hoover. That, of course is priceless.

Soooo, around November next year I am going to present him with a list of 'stuff' I really want, and say nothing about the bloody socks!

AuntMarch · 25/12/2023 18:26

@HowDoYouSpellThat I feel sad for you, even a restaurant or cinema voucher would have been something!

Angrymum22 · 25/12/2023 18:29

I buy myself perfume and a decent gift every year. I lost my parents over twenty yrs ago and realised that no one really thought about the lack of gifts in my pile every year so decided early on to sort it out myself.
However, this year DH and DS bought me a necklace with matching earrings. It has only taken 30yrs for DH to work out what style of jewellery I like and they are spot on. DH had a stroke last year so it’s not easy for him to get out and DS can’t drive at the moment ( has had surgery on his shoulder) so I’m more impressed that they made the effort between them.

I could always win any contest, I believe, in shittest presents thanks to my DM. I am almost a pensioner now, and she's still doing it, as she has done throughout my life. She basically buys things throughout the year when they are cheap/on sale/being given away and puts them away for Christmas. It is then pretty clear that she drags everything out and thinks, 'Right. Who can I give THAT to?'.

This year, I received a long skinny 2024 calendar with photos of Cats on it. (I am allergic to cats and consequently don't like them) I also received the third copy she has given me (last two were last Christmas and last birthday) of a large book on '10,000 Dreams Explained'. Fuck knows why. I'm not a believer in this sort of thing and neither is she. As it's the third time she's bought me this same book I googled it and I see they sell for £3.34 on awesomebooks.com. Presumably she bought several of them at the same time to save on the postage, probably from the sort of free catalogue of cheap books that comes through your door. Perhaps I'll be getting another copy for my birthday in 4 months time.

I also got a pair of pyjamas in a size 10/12. I am a size 20/22. I suspect this is yet another passive aggressive dig over the fact that she thinks I am too fat. She tells me every time I see her that I need to lose weight. My parents are better off than I am, so it isn't a money issue. It's genuinely the thought that counts - and she's never bothered put any thought into what I (or anyone else, to be fair) might like.

I would like a book token. I tell her this every year. I'm not hard to buy for.

HowDoYouSpellThat · 25/12/2023 18:34

Thanks @AuntMarch hes been busy at work.. but we have a lot of shared interests so there's lots of things he could have booked or arranged. I think the worst thing was that I wasn't surprised that he hadn't made the effort. It's often the same for birthdays, mothers day.. either something late or totally forgotten.

Growlybear83 · 25/12/2023 18:34

Admittedly it was a couple of years ago but my best friend gave me an ashtray made out of about 20 different sized contorted skulls. It was made of plastic and I stopped smoking 25 years ago. 😳

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 25/12/2023 18:37

That's so funny 2 calendars 😂that's honestly made me laugh but don't feel I'm laughing at you cos my bf got me nothing!

Aftershave, socks, a card, a mug, some nice bits

Sorry op but my heart sank reading this list. Neither of you got amazing presents, his are of course a lot worse.

CuttyShark · 25/12/2023 18:40

I also love that this is in the relationships topic, rather than Christmas, chat, AIBU... this fuck up is brining the relationship into question

Olika · 25/12/2023 18:40

For me @ADesignForLife DH wins the award 🤣

Pewpewbarneymcgrew · 25/12/2023 18:43

A cliff richard book , no comment

JasmineBa · 25/12/2023 15:51

I got nothing. My partner and I have been on terrible terms recently and I have intentions of separating. I spent £170 on gifts for DP from the children. I got nothing at all. With the comment ‘I’ve ordered you a gift but it hasn’t come sorry’ and that was that.

To quote a line from Dumb and Dumber..."Who are these sick people?" I often think that when I read about these depressing situations on Mumsnet. I also got nothing. Bf been off with me since Friday for absolutely nothing but would have thought he would have been in touch Christmas Day. Another new low to add to the collection this year.

MulledWineBeMine · 25/12/2023 18:45

QueenConsort · 25/12/2023 16:38

Am I being an ungrateful bitch?

No you're not, that's rubbish.

I'm absolutely crap at presents, but even I would do much better than that!

that said, what's he like other than gift giving??
