Been with my partner 6 years, had a milestone birthday today and he got me a second hand book I already have unwrapped and for the 3rd year running just worked until late. Am I a brat for feeling down about it or is everyone else’s partner like this.

Time to change your language OP.

I don’t mean that in ungrateful way, it’s just the lack of thought.
Nobody would feel grateful getting an unwrapped second hand random book for their birthday. Nobody. Not a single person.

Maybe i sound awful.
No, you don't. You sound upset.

Thanks for letting me whinge
Whinge definition - complain persistently and in a peevish or irritating way.
^^ You haven't complained (in a normal sense), you haven't been persistent, peevish or irritating.

Does your partner imply you are those things?

Megbryan · 06/12/2023 21:11

Yes @AutumnFroglets oh well he’s actually just said he wants to split up. Great birthday.

Let him go. Don't beg him to stay.

And I'm sorry this has all happened on your special day.

wildwestpioneer · 06/12/2023 21:22

Sounds like he's just given you the best birthday present ever. Tell him thanks very much, you've given me my freedom and singleton back, I accept and then pack him a bag.

Wave him goodbye enthusiastically. Then celebrate your birthday.

I guess he realised it was on the cards. I'd smile and whole heartedly agree with him.

Angelsrose · 06/12/2023 21:56

Happy birthday and best wishes for a fresh new start for you.

Epidote · 07/12/2023 08:24

I'm not a birthday fan, but in this case the effort he had put is doing the opposite of what a birthday celebration means to do.
Its not you, is he

What?! He split with you on your birthday??

What a creep.

determinedtomakethiswork · 07/12/2023 09:48

An unwrapped secondhand book that you've already read is just about the worst present you can get someone! You are well rid of this man. Has he moved into your home by any chance?

Honestly with the lack of care and thoughtlessness (and I bet this is only the tip of the iceberg) this is the best gift he could have given you!

Your partner should be excited to get you a nice gift or treat. The second hand book was totally crap please don't think you ever had to be grateful for that!

Onwards and upwards for 2024!

Holdingsteady · 07/12/2023 21:51

He gave you a second hand book that you have already read? It sounds like he gave you your own book as a gift.

Well good riddance to him, you are in a much better position without him.

You have all your naughty forties ahead of you, ring a mate, get you glad rags on and start your new fantastic, exciting life.

Happy Birthday 🥳 🍷 🎁

Needanewnamebeingwatched · 07/12/2023 22:04

My 40th was the beginning of the end for my marriage, shame is I stayed for another 10yrs, before finally leaving him.

Anyway, let him go and have loads of really good birthdays from now on.

Happy birthday 🎂 🥳

KatBurglar · 07/12/2023 22:08

Happy Birthday, and good riddence to him.

BigButtons · 08/12/2023 07:02
