My MIL keeps spelling my name wrong. I have told her how to spell it. It's a simple 6 letter name. She has known me for 35 years. I am her only daughter in law.
Is she winding me up? It's driving me nuts!! Thoughts please 😡

I would personally start calling her by the wrong name. I'm petty though

Since she's otherwise a good MIL, then I would tend to some sort of explanation like a mental block she has or dyslexia (or if it's in texts that it's her phone?) - or at least something non-malicious.

How often does she actually need to spell your name anyway?

You can either keep correcting her or let it go.

Since your relationship is good apart from this one issue, it seems unlikely she's doing it to upset or annoy you.

It’s been 35 years. She is an otherwise good MIL. Why is it suddenly a big deal for you now?
I think you need to remind yourself you are lucky - and look up some MIL-from-hell stories here on MN.

It's hard to believe that it's anything but deliberate.

It's got to be one of the most passive-aggressive, batshit things I've ever heard of.

My own dad spells my name wrong half the time. He is in his late 70's and if he was in school now he would definitely be diagnosed as dyslexic he drops the e off my name and adds it to my brothers! The most memorable wax when he made a birthday cake when I was about 7 and spelt my name wrong when decorating it! It doesn't bother me, he can't help it, it doesn't mean he loves me any less!

MIL: Name abomination
You: Oh, no MIL, my name is Xxxxxx

Mil: Name abomination
You: That's not my name. It's Xxxxxx

Mil: Fucking it up yet again
You: Mil, I have told you my name is Xxxxxx

MIL: (now taking the piss addressing you)
You: That's really funny. You know how to say my name by now.

MIL: Name abomination
You: Okay, ooh you must really be struggling with my name. I can write it down for you if you can't remember, once I've done that you can keep hold of it because from now on I won't answer to anything else.
