It made me feel really uncomfortable and I feel it was quite inappropriate. AIBU?

You're not giving us enough information to make a judgement.
Was the person whose name they made fun of present? If so, did they mind?
Was it all in good fun, or was there an intention to hurt or offend?
Why are you so personally offended by what happened? Did you take it personally? Have you been bullied at some point in your life leaving you sensitive to these things?

You're going to have to give me some more to work with.

Agree with PP, it depends on the details/context......
I have good friends in the office and part of the banter is having a laugh - to an extent this is at each others expense but we don't actually offend or upset each other.

FriendsReunited · 07/11/2023 13:42

I get where you’re coming from
OP but at the moment the world needs more jokes and less taking of offence.

Someone wants to make fun if my name, feel free. I will mock you mercilessly right back.

EvenBetta · 07/11/2023 14:02

Not even a crumb of context 😄

JaneJeffer · 07/11/2023 14:25

Depends

Cas112 · 07/11/2023 14:31

Need more than that OP.....

Stokey · 07/11/2023 14:33

If they're making fun because it's not an "English" name, that would make me very uncomfortable and I would call it out. Otherwise it depends.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/11/2023 14:34

Is this a MN version of Vaguebooking?

WhatWouldHopperDo · 07/11/2023 14:37

the person they were laughing about, the person’a name sounds like a famous individual’s name

one said ‘most awkward/difficult name goes to this person’

I actually have an extremely difficult and awkward name

thats why it made me uncomfortable

OP posts:
MrsTerryPratchett · 07/11/2023 17:01

Did they find it funny?

I wouldn't take offence on someone else's behalf.

Just ignore it. It's up to the other proof they want to do something about it....if they even found it offensive or not. 🙄

SkaneTos · 07/11/2023 18:00

It can possibly be a bit weird/odd/funny when someone has the exact same name (first name and last name) as a famous person. But some famous persons have pretty common names.
For example, it could be weird/funny if a person that votes for a specific political party has the exact same name as a famous politician from a rival party. Or something like that.

BackAgainstWall · 07/11/2023 18:17

YADNBU

It shows they’re an unkind bunch.

SkaneTos · 07/11/2023 18:26

But obviously not OK to make fun of anyone.

MMmomDD · 07/11/2023 18:29

OP - the question os still -
was the person they were joking about there? And - did they mind?

People get so easily offended these days.
Your difficult name isn’t a personal failure of yours. You don’t need to take it to heart.
I see a funny side to mispronounced names - mine can be. Lots of my friends’ as well.
It’s not a big deal.

Strangetimesss · 07/11/2023 20:09

The person wasn’t there, no.

I have a famously bad name.

it was thoughtless.

OP posts:
SpoonyBitchell · 07/11/2023 20:14

Is their name Gary Glitter or similar?

JaneJeffer · 07/11/2023 20:17

Ok but they weren't talking about you were they?

LoveTheSoundOfRain · 07/11/2023 20:23

I’m on the fence with this.
If they were being really bitchy about it then I would be cautious around them. If it was a passing comment then it’s a bit of a non issue. It’s just a fact if their name sounds similar.

ColleenDonaghy · 07/11/2023 20:26

I think it depends on the name, and fair enough if you don't want to tell us. If it's, say, Jim Saville in a person older than the JS scandal then I think most people would hear it and wince in sympathy. For example.

waitholdup · 07/11/2023 20:42

Nope, need more information
