What does it mean when you give something?

My mother has, several times, given me things and then wanted them back again.
A year or so ago, she gave me 5 or 6 Bossons (plaster heads that you display on a the wall, very popular 50 years ago but of no particular value).
Anyway, I put them up but decided I didn't want them and took them to the charity shop.
Now my mum wants them back.
But I don't want to tell her what I've done, as she'll be very upset. So I tell her that they're in the back of a cupboard.
Bear in mind I am 65 and my mother is 92. So I know how ridiculous this is.
Bit aibu to think that when you give something to someone they can do what they like with it?

YANBU, but if you think she’ll be upset that you gave them away, I’d do as you suggest and tell her they’re in the back of a cupboard in your house and you’ll look them out for her. Then repeatedly “forget” to do so and hope she stops asking for them.
