Friendships on dating apps

Probably already know the answer but can you join a dating app just for friends? I use to have quite a lot of male friends I met through SM but I stopped talking to them when I met my ex as he didn’t like it. A friend suggested I joined a dating app just to chat but not with the intention of meeting up, would it be wrong? I know people don’t like it when someone is just looking for a pen pal but if you are honest upfront? Just miss having someone to talk to I guess but not looking to date. Has anyone done this?

Don't join a dating site if you don't want to date, that would be crap behaviour. There are friend sites but I don't know what they are TBH. Google will probably help.

Is it specifically male company that you are looking for OP? Hobbies that attract high percentages of men might be the way forward?

I just don’t imagine lots of me on apps will be looking just for friendship and nothing else.

Bumble has a BFF section for people wanting friends only so that’s worth a try

The only friends apps I’ve come across are for making mum friends, that’s not what I’m looking for.

I didn’t think of that but I’m not sporty which seems like most of the groups that attract men will be based on 🤔

Not all men are sporty! What interests you? Or are there any activities that you have always wondered about trying?

If I had a bit more time I would love to get involved in groups interested in local history for example.

IDontHateRainbows · 30/10/2023 14:49

I'd try and find a local group on Facebook or a meetup group and make friends that way rather than 1:1 dating stylem

Whataretheodds · 30/10/2023 14:54

Some dating apps have a friends setting (eg Bumble).

If you're just looking for friends don't use a dating service. Find hobbies or activities that are done with other people. Volunteer, do an evening class, join a sports club or a book group.

How about hiking? I think there are a lot of groups combining hiking

ManchesterLu · 30/10/2023 15:05

I've made lots of friends on Facebook Groups, searching for groups about things I'm interested in - like reading, crafting, and other hobbies. This could be a good thing to do.

PumpkinPick · 30/10/2023 16:21

Thanks for the suggestions. I’m on a few Facebook groups but it doesn’t really extend out of the group, there’s a walking group near me but again aimed at women. Most friendship groups seem to be. Someone suggested gaming to me which is probably the best suggestion so far! Not really a gamer but could give it a go.

If you fancy learning a language too Hello Talk is a great app to connect with people.

Catsafterme · 30/10/2023 16:44

I'm a guy, not looking for anything either or to meet but always open to making new friends, even online. Just thought I'd offer as you're looking for guys to talk to, whether that extends to online but no problem if not, probably the last place you'd have expected, lol.

@Catsafterme it's very gentelmany to offer your help to the OP Smile

There's an app called Meet-up which sounds exactly like what you're after.

It's not a dating app, it's for people to just make friends in their local area.

I signed up a few years ago and still get email notifications about social activities although I never actually went to one!!

It's this one:
