Facebook and Friend Request - what does this mean?

What does it mean if you send a friend request to somebody and when you see their page, the button to request as a friend is no longer visible? It is visible on my facebook page if I look for it but not on the person who has requested them as a friend. If they didn't want to hear from them surely they would have blocked them?

I'd assume they just haven't responded to the friend request.

Surely? There is a middle ground you know, something in-between "friend" and "blocked"?

I'm not really sure I understand what you're asking, but if you're saying that there is neither an option to friend request is no longer there nor is it obvious they've been blocked, I'd assume it's because they have not responded to the request. I do that when I don't want to engage with people but don't want to give them the satisfaction of knowing I've seen their request. For example, my mother, who I am no contact with, periodically friend requests me on Facebook. I ignore it for months at a time. I don't want to block her because I equally don't want to light a fire under that either.

I only block people who harass me or seem like spam accounts. If I don't want to talk with you, I just ignore you.

If you've already sent a friends request you won't see the button.

It means the friend request has not been acknowledged as accept or reject yet. The request button disappears once you have used it to prevent you sending multiple requests, to prevent abuse I would guess.

Well this is odd as we tested it out with someone else. Sent a friend request to someone at work, and told them not to do anything with it. Then looked at facebook and the button is still there with the option to "cancel request". This is different so it must mean something different, that the person has removed the request or refused it perhaps

Sounds like they've removed it to me.
