Are relationships overrated

sunshineandstarsgirl · 19/10/2023 19:13

I am in my 30s. Had 2 relationships so far. Both were phone relationships- reason being the first relationship happened when I was 14. The second was long distance. Both lasted only a few months. Now, at work I like a guy, don't know if I should do anything about it. Not sure if he likes me.
Sometimes I feel sad being single, other times I am glad I am single as I don't want kids.
What is your view of relationships/single life from your experience? Are relationships a lot of work? Are they worth it?

Depends on the person you are with. Sometimes it’s worth it, sometimes not. But yes. A relationship may require a lot of work. And I think it is really difficult to fo d a good person nowadays.

Nah, ultimately a waste of time. Far more exciting and interesting things in this world than being hooked up with someone.

Relationships get samey, dull, frustrating and they will eventually cheat.

It's the circle of life...

Or stay with each other and be miserable.

Relationships are nice, If you manage to find a good partner. But in my experience there is a high rate of infidelity, especially after having children. Form both sides though.

Depends of the relationship but I agree that a some point the routine displace the excitement that is why a good relationship not only required a compatible partner also daily work.

jadey1991 · 19/10/2023 20:16

Like many others have said, it depends on the person. I have been in my relationship with my childhood sweetheart for 16 years and we have 4 children together. However there are times I just wanna put him in a headlock lol.

I think you should just hold it out for a while. If you go up to him and say u like him etc it could go 2 ways.. 1. Either he will say he likes u back or 2. He might not be interested and will only put you in an awkward position...

@sunshineandstarsgirl
So you haven’t had a “real “ relationship yet ?
I find it very sad that you are going to get loads of cynical advice from people who have lived when you sound like you possibly have not ?

No, haven't been on a date ever as both my previous relationships were on the phone. My last relationship was in 2021. I feel sad about not ever having been on a date. But, scared to date as I see a lot of single mums and divorces. My cousin is a single mum and that scares me. I don't even like children very much.

Spend time finding out who you are and enjoying yourself.

There are so many great men out there - not that you would know it from MN [or my username, in fact ;)] - but there are.

Just make sure you throw the losers back!

Olika · 19/10/2023 20:36

What is it that you want in life? What is important to you? If you are happy to be by yourself then don't try to be with someone just for the sake of it. But if you have never had a serious relationship then perhaps you should explore that.
Personally I online dated a lot once I started to explore that and it took several years before I met the man I wanted to marry and have children with. And it's so worth it and I am so content and in peace.

Relationships are hard work sometimes but also worth it. Despite what people on here would have you believe not all men are abusive cheaters. It’s normal to have some ups and downs in a relationship but when the right person comes along there are more easier, good times than bad.

Ask the guy at work if he wants to go out for a walk / coffee at lunch time. Continue fostering your own interests and life and be prepared that it might take a few tries before you find someone you like enough to settle down with or maybe it won’t happen. I’d do it now though before you get old and stuck in your ways.

Relationships are not "overrated" in my opinion, not at all, (but I do have a high sex drive).

There are loads of benefits, financial benefits being significant for example it's statistically very hard to buy a house as a single person. Also renting, cheaper to rent as a couple. Not saying anyone should hook up for the sake of halving their rent 😂 that'd be ridiculous.

Other benefits include experiencing the world through another person's lense. Eg, choosing a travel destination, your partner might suggest something you've never thought of which turns into a life changing experience. Likewise you get to share your passionate interest in something with someone else...

I haven't been single since aged 17. Had many different partners mind you, some overlapped a bit when I was younger, I like men though.

If it's not for you, it's not for you though. That's ok too. Sometimes the grass does look greener on the other side and so sometimes I think I'd prefer the freedom that comes with being single.

You don’t have to have kids wether you are in a relationship or out a relationship.

Don’t listen to all us cynics . We have been there bad done it. This is your life and your choices .
Getting a broken heart is a life experience .
Being a single parent is s**t
You don’t have to get married or have kids but you should go out and live a little we must take chances .

I don’t love with regrets . Well more recently I have some but don’t miss out on living because you are scared .
You will be able to set boundaries about what you want and don’t want, which will bring the respect you deserve . These are good things .

Go live a little and don’t do anything you don’t want to do . Have fun . 😊

Relationships even bad ones have added to my life.

You can have sex and a relationship without kids.
If you don't want kids, don't have kids.
