My relationship with DP is hanging by a thread. He looked into my internet cache and found...

... 16 GB of cached MN pages.

He had to take my hard disk into his work (he's an IT geek) and delete them all. Took him 6 hours.

He has been sniggering at me all day.

Not helped by my throwing a hissy fit at the weekend and insisting that we had to get a new computer as mine was unacceptably slow. It seems to be working a bit better now

You need to delete all temp internet files and all cookies. I do it before I shut my work computer down each day. I dont want IT coming around when I'm not there and seeing just how much time I'm spending/wasting on MN

quint · 04/03/2008 19:18

princessmel, quint: please bear with me, I'm stupid about this and might well be wrong. I THINK that this is something that happens automatically each time you view a web page - your pooter saves a copy of the page, called a 'cache', so that if you return to the same page later it loads more quickly.

Most pooters will have a limited cache.

This is the total and complete sum of my knowledge of caches.

All about Cache

(Firefox on a mac - you can also clear all your private data by going to Tools > Clear Private Data)

havalina · 04/03/2008 20:55

My Pc was doing the taking off thing too, I then noticed about a week later that there was a dust layer about an inch thick on one of the grille things . In my defence I'd never noticed that specific grille lol.

just hovered the inside of my pc and it is all sounding much better, thank you for the tip!

princessmel · 04/03/2008 21:10

Thanks policywonk. How will I know if my cache is full??????

policywonk · 04/03/2008 21:11

Hoovered the inside of your PC?

Perhaps we should have a support thread for raving troglodytes. 'Computer maintenance bootcamp, Week 1: Remove Kinder Egg toy from hard disk'.

princessmel - your PC probably has a self-emptying cache - that is, when it gets full up it starts deleting the oldest files.

Mine should have been set up like this, but wasn't.

Sorry, I know I'm not quite answering your question but I don't really know the answer

Thanks Pw. Next time I talk to my brother I'll ask him. He fixes all my pc problems!!!

SlightlyMadSecretSoundWinner · 04/03/2008 21:21

Princessmel

Your hard drive is probably big enough to cope.

Don't worry....it'll all be fine....

Serioiusly there should be a limit set as to how much space the cache can occupy. When it gets full it deletes the old stuff to make room for new stuff.

If you want to check (on internet explorer) go to tools...internet options....General tab. Settings (under broswing history) set the "disk space to use value" at about 20-50Mb.

TBH we don't really need to cache most pages these days as they load so quickly on broadband.

policywonk · 04/03/2008 21:23

There you go! And SMS is a woman and everything!

OP posts:
SlightlyMadSecretSoundWinner · 04/03/2008 21:24

I could be an ogre eating werewolf????

princessmel · 04/03/2008 21:25

Yay!! SMS is FAN-BLOODY-TASTIC and one day you'll find out why

policywonk · 04/03/2008 21:26

Nah... werewolves can't right-click.

OP posts:
SlightlyMadSecretSoundWinner · 04/03/2008 21:26

I didn't say anything about right clicking
