What was your engagement like ...

Sitting cuddling my newborn got thinking ... would love to hear your engagement stories on how you or your partner proposed.

Or did you not have an official proposal and just decide to get married?

I sort of knew DH was going to propose but didn't know when! We went out for a walk for our anniversary (lockdown in situ) and then at the top of a hill looking out onto the vista below, he got down on one knee, asked the question, and I was so happy I cried a bit and then grinned for about a week.
We got married this year and it was the happiest day ♥️

I was trying to nurse our PFB, my milk hadn't come in yet and I was sitting on the bed, babe in arms , crying.
I hear him speak behind me, asking if we can be a real family.
I flip out, shouting about how we have a baby, live together, love each other, we are a real family....then I see the ring he is holding!
Just about to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary in 2 weeks.

This is so beautiful and IMO the perfect proposal. How was your wedding? Was it big or small? Congratulations x

It must be the newborn hormones but this made me quite emotional. How lovely 🥹

We didn't have one. We just sort of said we would one day and just went there and then to the register office to book the initial appointment. The wedding, which was a really small and informal affair, was 3 months later.

TGGreen · 02/09/2023 22:54

It was my 23rd Birthday only four months after we started seeing each other. I can't actually remember the proposal.

Hellocatshome · 02/09/2023 22:55

DH proposed while we were jammed in like sardines watching the ball drop in Time Square on new years eve. He couldn't get down on one knee as we were jammed in so tight. Someone next to us realised what was happening and shouted out "we've got a proposal over here" and then "she said yes" and 100s of people were cheering and clapping and DH who is a huge introvert got really embarrassed. Then we had to walk at about 1am through some dodgy looking street to get back to our hotel and I was convinced I was going to get mugged for the ring.

Mine was our first Christmas in our forever home, in front of the Christmas tree - we still have the same Christmas tree so it always brings back lovely memories. We're now 8yrs down the line, married with our 4 children in tow - the youngest being 7 weeks and the final piece to our family.

MrsALambert · 02/09/2023 22:59

In a restaurant while we were on holiday in Rome.

ShinyBandana · 02/09/2023 23:08

Mine proposed as I was miscarrying our first pregnancy. Sounds weird I know, but he acknowledged the timing but said that he wanted to say that it would be easy to be together during the good times but he wanted to show me that he’d be there for the really bad times too, so would I marry him. He’s absolutely seen that promise through and we’ve been married for 15 years with 2 kids now. He has always had my back

We'd just got home from work. I was sitting on the sofa and he gsat on the floor. I asked him what he'd broken (we'd been moving stuff the previous weelend and he'd broken several plates) before I noticed the ring. 26 years later and he still teases me

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/09/2023 23:12

No proposal, we knew we wanted to get married, buy a house and have a baby. We’d been to see a mortgage advisor and got the go ahead, were celebrating with a curry and while we were waiting for the takeaway he said “so can we get married then?”

We went home and booked it, got hitched a couple of months later. It was splendid and he’s my best husband yet.

Love that to bits and can completely see what he meant 🥲

Hadalifeonce · 02/09/2023 23:14

I had no idea he was going to propose, we were on holiday in a very romantic place, he proposed when we were totally alone. He had paid £2.50 for the ring, I still have it, we married 4 months later, that was 25 years ago

Seashellies · 02/09/2023 23:20

I absolutely love puffins, always have and as a surprise as part of one of our holidays he managed to get us a booking to Skomer Island. This had long been a dream of mine anyway, and when he proposed just before boarding the boat back to the mainland it was just perfect. He said he didn't want to do it at the start of the trip so it wouldn't overshadow finally getting to see puffins in their natural habitat 🤣 we had discussed prior to it that we wanted to get married, so although the aspect of getting married wasn't a surprise him proposing was!

bouncydog · 03/09/2023 04:47

We were having dinner at the local pub on a Friday evening, when I was asked if I was doing anything the following Friday. I said no I didn’t think so - why-and now DH said “I thought we could get married”! Which we did by special licence. It will be our 41st anniversary in a few days!

Not weird at all. The most meaningful proposal I’ve ever heard.

We'd been together 11 years but we did get together at 18. We had a house and a daughter who was then 3. It was Christmas Eve and he got down on one knee after we'd sorted everything out for the morning. We were just watching tv. It was unexpected and lovely. He'd got my best friend to design a ring and another friend is a Hatton garden jeweller, so she had it made. 20 odd years later, we are divorced but still friends. I had the ring enlarged and gave it to our daughter on her 18th birthday (I've got tiny fingers and my daughter's are normal sized!) I Did the same thing with my wedding ring which was diamond encrusted, for her 21st. He gave his wedding ring (Cartier with diamond studs) to our son on his 18th birthday, this year. Sad that we are now divorced but happy that we are friends and still celebrate the kids' birthdays etc all together. I'm friends with his partner and he's friends with mine.
I'll never marry again and neither will he.

Mine was a huge surprise!

Dh had been working away and was due home but phoned to say he had been delayed (Unbeknown to me he was already home and had gone to speak to my mum and go ring shopping)

He booked a table at our favourite restaurant and at the end of the meal he did a "wee speech" about how much he loved me and wanted me to always be a part of his life and popped the question with ring in hand.

married 23 years now.💜💙

Tiredmum100 · 03/09/2023 08:57

My dh proposed out on a walk. We were in Rhosilli (gower) and decided to walk out to worms head as the tide was out. So we get over there, I'm all hot and sweaty, wearing joggers. He pulls out this ring and asks me to marry him. I was so shocked I said no! But quickly changed my mind. We've been married for nearly 13 years now.

Simbaiamyourfather · 03/09/2023 09:09

We got engaged on the 12/12/12 at 12.12 in Disneyland Paris. In a shop 😂 My husband was desperately trying to get us to the lake but I kept wondering off to look at things because I had no idea. I think I had just shouted at him to stop messing around as his alarm kept going off and he wouldn't try on a hoodie! Was Still pretty magical though ❤️
