Feel uncomfortable about his comment

guy I’m dating and I were watching a tv show with an Arab character and a white character. We are not white.

Arabic character was quite terse with the white person and shouted at them. Guy I’m dating likes to interject / provide commentary when we’re watching things (generally quite witty but missed the mark this time), and said (in the characters voice): “That’s on you, you white bastard!”

I feel a bit confused why he even brought their race into it! That was not the subject of the show. I just feel uncomfortable!

is this justifiable? I did make a comment in response and he implied the character making the comment was racist but I really didn’t see it myself

That would make me feel uncomfortable too. As you say, the characters race had nothing to do with whatever it is.

Two racists don’t make a right. Watch for any other out of character comments like this and next time question his behaviour

BCBird · 16/08/2023 22:09

Yes it would make me feel uncomfortable.

Pinkbonbon · 16/08/2023 23:11

Did he mean he was saying what he thought the (racist) character was thinking?

ArcticSkewer · 16/08/2023 23:14

It's really annoying when people talk during TV programmes or films. Doesn't it annoy you in general?

Showboatbbb · 17/08/2023 08:21

@Pinkbonbon yes exactly

So he was mimicking a character he felt was being racist.

Like if you were watching a show about a massive misogynist, and you put on a gruff voice and said "Back into the kitchen little lady!".

I don't see the problem

Fidgety31 · 17/08/2023 08:35

I think if this post was a white man making that comment about a black person then the responses would be very different .

it was a racist remark - no matter how you dress it up . That’s how he thinks / views white people.

AnimalisticBehaviour · 17/08/2023 08:47

I think you're overthinking it.

BananaSlug · 17/08/2023 12:50

Wouldn't bother me..

@Pinkbonbon yes exactly

Well in that case no.
He was just being the character.
So that would be like saying the actor is also racist for acting the part of a racist character lol.

That being said, if it made you uncomfirtable, it might be that it's brought some other things into perspective. Maybe you already feel he is racist towards white people.

I'd be on mu guard.
