Houseguest snorting

I don't think there's anything I can do, so I'm just venting. The guest is not a smoker. They have a horrible snort-grunt thing they do, drawing phlegm.

The snorting is a sort of gargle/drawing up phlegm, and is then swallowed.

Waking up: lots of snorting. You can hear it from their room.
Shower: lots of snorting, blowing their nose in the shower.
Mealtimes: lots of snorting. Puts me off meals.

Random times: snorting.

In public/public transport: snorting. People look at our group, like wtf.

I do this. I've got post nasal drip due to having tonsillitis repeatedly as a kid. I get massive tonsil stones, which causes the post nasal drip.

The only way I can clear it is by snorting, blowing my nose doesn't get it, and if I don't snort I end up gagging, and coughing.

It's disgusting. Believe me I know. I always take myself off to the bathroom to do it, I know the sound really goes through my wife and daughter.

Luckily for me it only tends to be a first thing in the morning problem, so it doesn't tend to happen in front of others, but I loathe being a houseguest because I know they'll hear it.

Your guest sounds grim however, I'd never do it at mealtimes or in front of people.

I used to work with someone who did this - it was vile
In the end someone had to have a word with him and he stopped.
I felt sick every single time....

Do you remove the tonsil stones regularly? Gargling with hot salt water makes them easier to remove.

Vegandiva · 14/07/2023 17:53

it may be caused by consuming too many dairy products from cows

that would drive me insane as well, my sympathies to you 🤗

In do my best, the ones in my left tonsil are quite easy to pop out, but my right tonsil has a really deep pocket that's an absolute pain to try and empty without triggering my gag reflex, which triggers a whole different range of disgusting noises!

Do you know what was said?

The person who talked to them just said something along the lines that they probably hadn't realised that the sound was really irritating and affecting a lot of people, and would they be able to pop into the gents to do it in private. He was pretty mortified actually and said it was normal where he came from (not the UK). He did stop though, which was the main thing.

I don’t even have misophonia and still found it disgusting so you have my sympathies!

Hope it’s a short visit OP, or that you can find the courage to say something.
