I've been single far too long and am starting to feel like I'm on the heap-am still in my twenties but have never even received a "serious" tag on a relationship (despite a few hitting the two year mark). I want your stories of chivalry and knights in shining Audi's xx

this certainly gives me hope, am going through a divorce with one child, will be 36 next month so crikey there must be hope for me too

agree it will happen when it happens

nippersnappers · 25/02/2008 11:57

I met DH at the age of 30 after years of long term but destructive relationships.

If I'd met DH sooner I probably wouldn't have given him a chance, as I wasn't ready to accept that I deserved someone who was truely wonderful, wouldn't mess me around, steal my money, cheat on me etc.

Five years on we have two beautiful boys and got married three weeks ago.

Its all good and you will get there, but enjoy the here and now too.

mumblechum · 25/02/2008 12:01

Met DH No 1 at 18. Met DH No2 at 25, got together with him at 27, still together 18 years later.

jumpingbeans · 25/02/2008 12:04

sorry not much help, met dh at 13 he was 15 first boyfreind ahhhh

rantinghousewife · 25/02/2008 12:06

I met dh at the age of 27, although I'd been married and divorced and had a child already by that point. He'd also been married and divorced but no children and we'd both been single for a while beforehand.
I actually think it's a timing issue, he was ready to settle down, I was ready to settle down, voila! We've settled down.
Of course I did have a history of going out with dickheads/arseholes and tossers previously. My mother said she knew he was going to be the one for me, when he turned out not to be a tosser.

nippersnappers · 25/02/2008 12:12

Ditto rantinghousewife,

My dad said more to my Dh the first time I brought him home to meet my parents, than he had said to my previous 'boyfriend' in the whole 8 years we had been together.

Cracking judge of character my dad.

Cam · 25/02/2008 12:16

Met dh2 at 38, he was 36.5

Been together 14 years, married for 10, dd 11 years old

NomDePlume · 25/02/2008 12:25

Kewcumber · 25/02/2008 12:27

pmsl no hope for me at 43 then!!!

rookiemater · 25/02/2008 13:05

I met my DH when I was 33 through a dating website. I'd been single ( with a few flings and short term relationships) for about 7 years.

Within 1 year we had bought a house together, within 2 years we were married and within 3 we had a baby.

We both say that if we had met each other in our 20s we probably wouldn't have worked out as a couple as we were both concerned about more material things and basically just wanted to enjoy ourselves, travel and have fun.

We went to see "Definitely Maybe " at the weekend and there was one good comment which was that meeting the right person is about being there at the right time and I think there is a lot in that.

I also think that for me anyway, meeting men through going out to bars and clubs was never going to work. I'm not a natural flirt and like one to one discussions, preferably with someone who is sober.

Don't worry at all, you have plenty of time, meanwhile go out and enjoy yourself.

Tinker · 25/02/2008 13:06

I was 37 when met current Mr T

rookiemater · 25/02/2008 13:14

I like the way you say the current Mr T, is he due to be retired at some stage, and does he know about it ?

TLV · 25/02/2008 14:19

how many of you had children from previous relationships and did that hinder anything?

carmenelectra · 25/02/2008 14:22

It seems like i was quite young compared to some!

Met dp at 23 and he 27. Had ist ds when i was 29!

tissy · 25/02/2008 14:24

met dh at 35 married at 37

nothing serious before that

scorpio1 · 25/02/2008 14:24

first 'd'p i was 15; we split when i was 18, we had one ds.

DH i got with when i was 18 but met when i was 15...We have been together 5 years now and maaried for 5 weeks. We have one ds and i am pg with our dd.

He also has a ds with someone else (yes we are complicated), so we both brought a child with us which we were both aware of. There have been some issues bt we are mostly settled now - much better since dss started school.

mumblesmummy · 25/02/2008 15:19
  1. But I don't think age or when it happens is a factor in the slightest- it's just something that happens. I was busy focusing on me and the next thing I knew, it just came about. Don't worry about running out of time, just see this time as you time.
Oblomov · 25/02/2008 15:33

I, like lots of others here was in my late 20's.
I KNEW.
I am not 'settling' for anything, I mean I am here becasue I REALLY want to be.
Maybe that is one of the benefits of meeting someone in your late 20's.

Oblomov · 25/02/2008 15:37

I agree with rookie, I don't think pubs are the place to meet.
I had no serious relationships prior to dh.
I met dh by chance. But I do think that a very good dating website, and I mean those that are there for serious , marriage potential, rather than a flirt and as much shagging as possible - and these do exist, is at the moment, the best place I can think of.
Atleast you know that the people are serious and are looking for what you are looking for.

Flibbertyjibbet · 25/02/2008 15:43

one week before my 36th birthday.
Been together 9 years and have two ds's aged 3 and 1.
You are in your twenties and worried about being on the shelf??? Get a grip!!!!

boudoiricca · 25/02/2008 15:43

Blimey - I LOVE this thread. Am 33 and single and was starting to panic slightly about dying a spinster... Have a tendency to fall hard for men who are never going to be serious about me and finally finished a long-term long distance relationship of this kind before Christmas. Was thinking that maybe my sights are set too high and I should give up and try to settle... So lovely to hear all your stories - I will hang on in there!

izzybiz · 25/02/2008 15:46

I was 20 and Dh was 17!!

We have been together 11 years and only just got married.

Oblomov · 25/02/2008 15:53

flibberty, thats not fair. By 28 was starting to get well worried.
One of my friends mothers kindly pointed out to me that :
At 29 years old, and not married, with my best childrearing days behind me, I better get a move on
I felt like saying:
"I have been f**king trying, believe me".

bigdonna · 25/02/2008 15:58

my my dh at 28 married aT 32 HAD KIDS AT 33 AND 35YRS

Flibbertyjibbet · 25/02/2008 21:20

Single/divorced people have often said of me in the last few years 'oh you have given me some hope if you met dp and had kids at your age'
