I'm divorced now and it's water-under-the-bridge but I do wonder how many women are unknowingly married to gay men? Homosexuality is a disgrace in my ex's culture, to the point gay men stay living with their parents as 'helpful' sons. I also found out this year that both my grandfathers were gay too. I can understand that, as husbands were scarce after the war and marriage gave respectability.

Haven’t been in your shoes OP, but in the UK I would suggest the number isn’t as much as is reported. High profile cases (Philip Schofield for example) generating headlines probably make it seem more common.

To just give basic statistics. Roughly 2.1% of the male population in the UK are gay (2019 figures).

So almost 98% of men are in legit straight relationships. You would assume that the vast majority of the remaining 2% (circa 700k) are in gay relationships, meaning the total % who are living a lie is incredibly small. Of course this figure may be slightly more in less tolerant cultures like that of your ex.
