Do people still have nightmares about their ex?

I have been diagnosed with PTSD, and I was in an abusive marriage. I left in 2018 and got out of my situation, but still have to keep in contact because we have 2 dc together. Contact is minimal and by text, just about picking up/dropping off the dc. I still have vivid nightmares most nights about him. Really want to shake off the grip he still has over my mind. Will these go away eventually? Anything I can do to help? Are other people in the same situation?

Thanks
.

Hi OP,
I’m so sorry about your nightmares. Are you receiving treatment as, if not, please do as it’s very unlikely to get better by itself.

Yes.
Despite moving far away due to violence and abuse against my children and I.
I'm diagnosed with c-ptsd thanks to him.
I had EMDR therapy online two years ago and it helped, but I don't think the nightmares will cease until my children are both adults.

I left my first husband 23 years ago. I still dream about him but fortunately it's not often any longer. It will get better in time. Xx

Thanks for your replies. I've made an appointment to speak to my councillor on Friday. She specialises in trauma. Hopefully it will help
