Eyes across a supermarket trolley

I go into a local small supermarket to get a few bits and pieces quickly leaving tween dc in car, and I notice a male customer calling to the butcher in the supermarket, it looked like they had been arranging something and they were both smiling and laughing and the customer was calling out "ok that works for me!" as he walked away. I remember thinking he had a nice voice.

Then a few minutes later I was in an empty aisle and I had left my trolley in the middle of the aisle absent mindedly as I look at the shelves and I notice the same man who had been chatting to the butcher walk towards me. My trolley is in his way so I quickly walk to move it, and say sorry to him and smile, and he smiles and says something in a nice tone of voice, and passes. I turn back to what I am doing and think briefly to myself that I bet he'd be nice to be in a relationship with, and I then forgot about it.

I then get the weirdest sense he is looking at me in a "connection" sort of way (I am laughing as I write this as I know how it sounds). I walk off and start loading up some things I need somewhere else and realise he has appeared again and is looking at me while he is doing what he is doing. I then go to checkout and leave and as I dock my trolley he is at his car loading things into his boot, and I feel him looking at me, so I look at him and he is looking at me, looking very serious, mask now off, nice looking, and I feel like a teenager with a crush and go back to my car, where my dc have been waiting for me and I drive off. The man and I are closer to middle age than teens but it felt like cupid's arrow!

Has this ever happened to you and would you have stopped and said something at any point, if you were interested and single and assumed he was interested and single? Just wondering really!

This is lighthearted by the way!

A nice thing to put a spring in your step for the rest of the day but nope I wouldn't have had the nerve to approach him if I were single.

infirmofintellect · 08/03/2022 08:50

Ah I am pleased about that! I was wondering if my reaction was unusual.

It was nice, though, it made me smile afterwards!

Same time same place next week?

GirlMum93 · 08/03/2022 16:44

It has happened to me before OP and I regret not acting on it ever since. I don't think about it though, you've only just reminded me. That was years ago though and I never saw him again. Couldn't take his eyes off me more so than me with him.

The best part... he turned up in a Rolls Royce amazing suit and had a chauffeur!! Sad

Yes. Something similar happened to me. Passing each other in a supermarket isle and we both stepped to the same side, then the other side, then then back again until we nearly crashed into each other. By this point we were both awkwardly laughing about it (and both bright red!). Saw him in the car park loading his car up and we made eye contact again, smiled at each other and (both) went bright red again. I drove off with butterflies in my tummy (the happy ones, not the nervous ones) and a big smile on my face.

It was during one of the lockdowns and it certainly brightened up my day. Not seen him since.

I hate to alarm you OP, but have you seen the trailer for the film Fresh starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and my boy Sebastian?

Just don’t start chatting in the meat aisle…..

infirmofintellect · 08/03/2022 21:47

That film looks very grim.

Very little possibility anything would become reality as my life is very complicated at the moment.

I did also wonder whether he was looking at me because my knickers were sticking out or something and he was wondering how to tell me!

It is nice to hear other people's stories. I think I was surprised as it really felt like it came out of nowhere, one minute everything down to earth as usual and the other hit by cupid's arrow! I would also love to hear about someone who experienced something like this, though, bumping into someone anywhere and being taken by surprise feeling something mutual, which turned into a life long love.

ariela I like your style. But no I really couldn't. I had to pick up snacks for dc sport on Monday and ended up going to a different supermarket to avoid any possibility of seeing him!

girlmum hmmm never trust a man in a Rolls Royce, my nan used to say. You might have dodged a bullet there.

dinosaur well, never say never! The universe acts in strange ways! You might cross paths again!

This is lovely to read!! Are you single? I hope you see him again.

Ahh.. for me it was a man in an ice-cream van, St Albans, circa 1980. He had curly hair and a smile like David Essex.

He served ice creams to me and my friends, then he called me back and told me I was beautiful [swoon].

I walked on air for the rest of the summer, and even though I live 400 miles away, and it is 40 years later, I still get an ice cream every time I happen to be in St Albans Grin

Gotta be honest, I do this kind of thing every day! I'm single, and I enjoy it so why not. Way over the top eye contact, possibly a few gratuitous words, and then a lovely day dream for the next ten mins or so.
When I had a relationship last year, I almost sacked him off straight away as I didn't want to give this up!
