Phone upside down all the time

What is your stance on your partner always having his phone facing down so you can't see the screen? Are there genuine reasons for this other than having something to hide?

A ex of a friend of mine always used to keep his phone upside down all the time. When my friend went to look down his phone (she never had done before - he didn't believe she would do it for that reason), he burst into tears saying he didn't want her to look at it as he had a medical condition he'd been looking up. She didn't look down it in the end as she believed him but why would he panic and burst into tears? Surely he'd not been looking up this medical condition throughout the entire 2 years of their relationship?

Another friend's partner keeps his phone upside down all the time to protect the screen, apparently. But surely the screen is more likely to get damaged if it's touching a surface? I'm aware of screen protectors but his behaviour just doesn't make sense.

I get so annoyed that people fall for these excuses. Am I in the wrong? Are there genuine reasons why someone would never want to have their screen on display?

Please enlighten me. I'd love to hear genuine reasons as to why someone would keep their screen hidden.

I generally keep my phone face up, but I turn it face down if I'm making clear to the people I'm with that I'm not going to be distracted by it (ie won't see the screen light up). Ideally in those circumstances I'd put the phone away out of sight, but sometimes I don't have my bag or any pockets so it has to sit - upside down - on the table.

I always have mine face down as does my DP. Nothing sinister, it’s just so I’m not distracted by notifications.

IonaLeg · 02/08/2021 19:00

I keep mine face down out of habit. It started because I didn’t want to be distracted by notifications all the time, now I do it without thinking. My husband trusts me so it doesn’t bother him.

5togo · 02/08/2021 19:03

I find people do this in meetings and it helps stop you being distracted.

RogueV · 02/08/2021 19:08

Face down here too.. I think it’s habitual. Also with wfh it’s to stop distractions…until my watch starts beeping as well 🙄🤣

I don't like the distraction of flashing screens and lights. My phone is rarely off silent, so it also means it's easier for me to ignore it in favour of things I can do which don't need a screen. I spend so much time doing everything else on screens. It's my screen free time, having it upside down.

BiscuitDrama · 02/08/2021 19:11

If I’m looking at it, then put it down, it naturally goes face down. I’d have to actively twist it or slide it to leave it face up.

I wouldn't even know how my husband has his phone, it isn't something I've noticed. Maybe because I trust him?

I keep my phone face down all the time and I'm definitely not cheating. I'm not 100% sure why, just habit possibly. Although I'm rubbish with tech and find the screen randomly flashes on with notifications and annoys me.

QueenBee52 · 03/08/2021 04:26

Face Down.. just habit to protect the screen ☺️

GeorgiaGirl52 · 03/08/2021 04:44

I keep my face down because the screen is black and the surfaces it is sitting on are usually dark wood. When it rings I can't find it and have to feel for it. With the screen down and the colorful case up, it shows up on the desk or table.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 03/08/2021 09:17

Mine is often upside down as it means it goes into Silent mode. Don't want it constantly making noises when I'm watching telly etc.

Perciever · 04/04/2024 19:43

Everyone is commenting on why THEY keep their phone down…

YOU THINK THEY ARE GOING TO ADMIT TO BEING DECEPTIVE AND CHEATING?

need to use your intuition… asking people about cheating and lying while they cheat you and lie to your online face

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 04/04/2024 20:25

I keep mine in a bucket of water.

A bit of a nuisance with it sloshing about on the tube I'll admit, but it does keep prying eyes off my phone although not off myself strsngely enough...?

Namechange666 · 04/04/2024 20:29

I turned off notifications where you can read messages on my screen.

What if a friend sent something private and I was out and someone I am with then read it? So I've done that because I like to keep my conversations private. Also not hiding anything illicit.

But I never turn my phone upside down.

Always face down. Like a pp I have a rubber case so the screen is not touching anything. Its irritating to see it lighting up when you're doing something else. Dh has a phone cover that opens & closes. Keeps it closed all the time in between uses. Never thought for a minute he has anything to hide.
