When did you meet the parents?

Just curious really. I've been seeing someone for the past 3.5 months and I would like things to develop into a serious relationship. At what point would you expect to meet the family/parents?
I'd be comfortable with him meeting my mum and dad and sister.

Thank you.

Was worried dh was ashamed of me or something.. In fact he was trying to save me from her..

Junglejosephine · 09/06/2021 21:26

Grin that's funny!
He's seeing his parents next week, they're visiting him but he hasn't invited me

Maybe he wants to tell them in private.. They may be the type to start planning a wedding and scare you off!! Very early days for meeting them imo.

Hughbert · 09/06/2021 21:30

About a year in. It wouldn't occur to me to introduce someone to my parents after a few months.

Onelifeonly · 09/06/2021 21:30

I met my DH in October (many years ago) and he came to visit my parents just after that Christmas. Can't remember when I met his family but it was early on.

bellsbuss · 09/06/2021 21:30

After 5 weeks , we knew it was serious very quickly.

iklboo · 09/06/2021 21:31

We were friends in am dram before we got together so I'd already met them a few times when they came to see plays we were in and they'd stay for drinks afterwards.

Onelifeonly · 09/06/2021 21:32

But I introduced quite a few boyfriends to my family and wasn't necessarily that serious about them.

Trayble · 09/06/2021 21:32

After 2 months to meet his. After 3 months to meet mine.
Both in our mid 30's and both divorced.

Blueskytoday06 · 09/06/2021 21:34

It's coming up to 2 years and only met DP's Dad.

Junglejosephine · 09/06/2021 21:35

Ok all quite varying

I wouldn’t expect to after 3 months, I wouldn’t introduce anyone to my family after 3 months either though

ScabbyHorse · 09/06/2021 21:55

15 months

I think it depends on how close you are to your family and how casual they are dynamic wise. My partner is very close with his family but super casual (eg they'll pop into each other's places in passing without needing to call ahead much or plan etc) so it didn't feel a big deal to meet them after a couple of months. I appreciate though that in other families the dynamic may be different / they may live further away / may be more formal, which would mean it would feel a bigger deal to introduce someone as it would be an indicator of it being super serious rather than being the person you're dating and seeing how it goes. A few years in now and love having such an easy relationship with them, I feel really lucky I do.

PatsyClinSilVousPlait · 10/06/2021 00:04

I'd do it later than you are, unless circumstances made it easier not to.

Aquamarine1029 · 10/06/2021 00:07

Obviously, it can vary wildly for lots of different reasons, but I think only 3 months in might be far too quickly for many people.

Lan2020 · 10/06/2021 00:58

I met my partners dad after 6 months however this is because he lives in Spain half the year and it was the first time he had come home during our relationship (his mum has passed away).

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 10/06/2021 01:28

I met his mum briefly about 4 days into the new relationship, it was 3am and my now DP had wakened her as I had just started a v heavy period and had no pads/ painkillers etc. He had found me painkillers, hot water bottle but he didn't know where any sanitary products were kept in the house as it wasn't on his radar, she put her head into the airing cupboard to find pads as I passed through the hallway, we said awkward hellos but met properly later that week.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 10/06/2021 01:29

I met PILs before I met DH🤣
And I met his best mate prior to that.
all in the same evening.

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 10/06/2021 01:36

Sorry I didn't read the opening post properly 😳

I met his mum briefly about 4 days in, both parents in about a week max 10 days. His youngest sister around 12 days. The rest of his family about the month mark.

He met my family and a couple of close friends between the 10 days to 3 weeks point. Both families came together at 5 months and we announced our engagement at 6 months. We were both serious from the go.

MissTrip82 · 10/06/2021 01:40

For our families it would be normal by the three month mark. Different if it’s a really casual thing but we would expect to see a fairly new partner at a family BBQ etc. It doesn’t mean you have to get married.

updownroundandround · 10/06/2021 15:07

It varied depending on whether I was living close to family or had a family gathering when I was dating someone.

After 4-5 months, I'd be expecting an invite to a casual family gathering like a BBQ, if they were having one, but I wouldn't be expecting a 'formal' meeting.

Musicaltheatremum · 10/06/2021 15:15

4 days after meeting. He was inviting friends to stay in the upstairs and downstairs flats at his parents and asked after our first date if I wanted to come. I said yes so 6 days after meeting online...it was great...I'm marrying him soon.

lastqueenofscotland · 10/06/2021 15:24

3 months seems quite soon.
I’d have them meet friends first and go from there. My DM is quite a “character” (I think she’s lovely, but not everyone’s cup of tea) though, so it’s something I’d only do if I felt it was pretty serious

SamW98 · 10/06/2021 15:37

The fact I never introduced my ex to my parents after almost 3 years probably speaks volumes
