Chatting to a guy on a dating site. Every time I strike up a rapport with someone, they drop an absolute clanger Grin
Latest is that this guy is a rep for a tobacco company. I work with children with additional support needs, and I don't think our jobs could be further apart!
I just don't know how I feel about this. There could be less virtuous positions I suppose. Like a pimp or drug dealer maybe Grin (lighthearted) kind of

What does he think of his job? Does he see it as an evil stepping stone to better things or it he passionate pusher if tobacco on kids ?

I so disapprove of smoking and couldn't accept this. Too many sad tales of early death and illness caused by smoking.

We only started chatting today, so it's too early to get the measure of him. But I do get the impression that it was necessitated by Covid and that he doesn't like it.

@Viviennemary

I know what you mean. It's not really in keeping with my values either.

Principles are great, but in the real world they can be a luxury that not everyone is privileged enough to be able to afford.

I would give this guy the benefit of the doubt until I found out more about him. Maybe this job is a means to an end by someone who has a mortgage to pay and mouths to feed?

eatsleepread · 11/03/2021 20:25

I intend to do just that.

I totally understand you, OP. If this was a long and happy career selling tobacco products without a second thought, I would find that too far in opposition to my values to continue, especially seeing as I have lost so many family members to smoking related illnesses. However, if he has lost a job to covid and needs to keep the Bills paid then I would be wanting to find out more about him and his longer term plans and position on the tobacco industry.

I wouldn't want him feeling tortured and guilty or anything about needing to keep food on the table legally in a crisis but I would be a lot more comfortable to know he has at least thought through the dangers of promoting tobacco.
