"Merry Christmas xxx" "Thank you"

Am I reading way too much into this or is this a little rude?

This is a friend, not a close one but one i'd like to keep in contact with. Texted them Merry Christmas and just got a 'Thank you' in response. Didn't expect a full on conversation as obviously Merry Christmas is pretty short in itself

Not conventional but I don't see it as rude.

What did you want if you didn’t want a conversation? For an brief reply it sounds fine to me.

Well I just expected a 'Merry Christmas' back or 'you too' etc

Maybe a bit snippy, but I'm not sure if you were expecting a long chat. I think I'd have said "you too" out of politeness but that's as far as it can really go conversation-wise.

greenlynx · 26/12/2020 02:25

Have you sent them a card? And have you got a card from them?

SheilaWilcox · 26/12/2020 02:30

I think lots of people try not to use their phones on Xmas day.

katy1213 · 26/12/2020 02:33

Well, you made close to zero effort - and so did they.

GreenTiny22 · 26/12/2020 02:36

Christmas is a really busy, stressful.time for some people. A "you too" would have been nice, but it's possible they were so busy and just wrote a quick reply without thinking. It is quite rude but I wouldn't look into it so much, you'll only upset yourself

ThisShitDontMatter · 26/12/2020 02:45

Better than no reply at all I suppose? Thats even ruder!

squishee · 26/12/2020 07:50

Yeah that's weird. I'd expect them to reciprocate.

I've lived abroad for decades. When I tell my elderly DM at the end of every phone call that I love her, I often get a "thank you" too. Awkward.
