Hysteria - of the womb/mad.
Lunacy - madness/monthly cycle.
I might stop using these words!

Are you going to start calling piles of stick faggots now ?

MyBassIsAce · 19/07/2020 07:59

I've not used those terms for many years. Pure misogyny. Good for you.

cariadlet · 19/07/2020 08:00

I know about the mysogynistic origins of the word hysteria but surely lunacy derives from the long-held belief that there's a link between the full moon and madness; it's nothing to do with menstruation.

Pelleas · 19/07/2020 08:02

I often say I've been spayed rather than that I've had a hysterectomy. That arose from showing solidarity with my cat, though.

Hotwaterbottlelove · 19/07/2020 08:04

@pelleas I love that you wanted to show solidarity with the cat.

Lunacy - a monthly periodic insanity influenced by the moon

I don't think lunacy being connected to the moon is automatically linked to women.

A friend who works from the emergency services says they definitely get more calls relating to MH difficulties when there is a full moon.

Women do not all menstruate the same week.

TwentyViginti · 19/07/2020 08:58

Periodic doesn't just relate to menstruation! cariadlet is correct. Lunacy was associated with the full moon - for either sex.

BalloonSlayer · 19/07/2020 09:01

Hysterectomy just means hyster (womb) + ectomy (excision).

Why in the name of arse is that sexist?

I'll give you hysteria though. I understand they thought the uterus would roam around the body causing trouble.

LemonTT · 19/07/2020 09:23

Yes OP these are definitely the die on your sword issues for women today. As is a lack of accurate research to form your own opinion on any old bollocks you get told.

vikingwife · 19/07/2020 09:26

I too don’t believe lunacy is derived from women’s mentrual cycles. The lunar calendar is not specifically for women - the notion of a full moon making people go crazy is not gendered.

How often are people around you behaving like hysterical lunatics that you actually have to use these words in real life situations ?

TwentyViginti · 19/07/2020 09:28

I understand they thought the uterus would roam around the body causing trouble.

Well, uteri are kick ass. I wouldn't put it past them Grin
