What are my rights with elderly parents?

My parents are in their mid 70s and both have chronic health issues. I live approximately 60 miles from them and if/when one of them passes away, I’m wondering if I have any options in terms of moving the surviving parent closer to me?

They live in a housing association home (don’t own a property) and are on state pension/housing benefit/attendance allowance etc. I live in a different county to them and it’s not practical for me to move, as it would mean selling my house and uprooting my whole life as it stands. I don’t think them living with me would work either, as my house would need to be significantly adapted for disabilities.

I’m wondering what would be my next steps? Ideally, I’d love to get one or both into sheltered accommodation near to me. Would a new council accept that responsibility, I wonder? I wasn’t sure if you could just leave one local authority housing and move to another?

I’m trying to work out my best options, really, for when that time comes.

Your parents may not wish to move, if they have friends & memories in the area that they live now
Some people do not like change
Suggest, to gauge their feelings, ask them if they would move now

Secondly, people do live alone
Suggest, getting POA, look on www.gov.uk
Get things in place, bus pass or taxi, cleaner etc

They would need to lack capacity and you would need power of attorney - finances and health, to move them.

If they wanted to move now they could look into swapping their HA home to one nearer you.
