Good afternoon,

Just as the title suggests, I’m after a book on the body, puberty etc for my daughter, soon to be 10. Has anyone found a really top notch book? I may be wanting the moon-factually accurate obviously, written with an understanding of women’s position in society, a challenging and intelligent book which also informs and empowers!

I’ve seen a few, and I did buy her a simple one when she was 7, but the reviews aren’t all that comprehensive, so it’s hard to tell if the books on the market strike the right tone. I want one which firmly backs up her body her rules etc.

We also communicate about pretty much everything, but I really want her to have a brilliant go-to book if she doesn’t feel like sharing with me all the time and so on.

She’s an avid, confident reader I would say. Likes a challenge.

Any pointers very gratefully received. Thanks.

There a book you can get from WHSmith, can’t remember rhe title sorry, but it has a pink cover for girls. It describes each thing factually, carefully and compassionately.
Helped answer some of the questions my daughter had, but I told both mine, that they could ask me anything and I would answer ANYTHING clearly and honestly however embarrassing! And did!
Good luck

I’d be interested in this too!

I’m so open with DD that I didn’t really think she’d need one but great shout as there may well be things she wouldn’t want to ask me.

Following, DD is turning 9 and I want to get her a puberty book but want it to definitely be factually accurate as there's so much misinformation around. And preferably positive about the changes.

Just been having a look online, influenced by OP!
Lots of books seem to mention awkwardness and embarrassment etc-definitely not something I wanna put into DDs head tbh

I have 4 teenagers and a 10yr old DD, I always found Usborne books fantastic for this subject matter.

I posted in Feminism chat first, and I’ve been recommended to look at Robie Harris and Lynda Madaras books on the topic. I’m off to have a google.

I bought my daughter ‘what’s happening to me’ when she was 9 or 10. She’s hit puberty early. She re reads it often so I think it’s helpful

'The Care and Keeping of You' is the one I bought for my 8 yo DD (on MN reccomendation). It has one for older girls too. It is an American book so I've had to explain some of the different word usages to her (e.g. drugstore is chemist).
It answered a lot of DDs questions.

ordinaryword · 28/01/2020 15:46

As pp has suggested the care & keeping of you.
Very informative and appropriate for that age. My daughter found in useful.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 28/01/2020 16:08

Are you there God it's me Margaret by Judy Blume. It's a story book and American but it's great! I read it and it saved me when I was going through puberty!

MrsApplepants · 28/01/2020 16:34

The care and keeping of you is a great book

MMmomDD · 28/01/2020 17:06

This one. It covers most subjects and is in funny drawings.

Lady I work with was a sexual health nurse and advised me to get a book called
What's happening to me from amazon. My 10 year old y5 dd enjoyed it

iloveredwine · 28/01/2020 18:43

What's happening to me. I have used the boy and girl version.

PeppermintPasty · 28/01/2020 20:21

Yes, that does look good. Thank you all for your suggestions.
