If you say no to a casual invitation do you suggest an alternative?

Just after some opinions on this. When a friend casually invites me out, if I can't make it I will suggest an alternative. E.g friend: fancy a drink on Friday, me: sorry can't make it, how about next week instead. But I've got a friend who never offers an alternative. I have slightly dodgy self-esteem and I find the lack of attempt to arrange something else makes me feel a bit unwanted.

Just wondered what other people would do in this situation, try to arrange an alternative or just say that you can't make it.

It depends if i want an alternative or if I am saying no because I don't want to do it/meet the person in the first place.
