Are you a gambler if you think the next big thing will sort out large debts?

I've just read the gambler always thinks that 'just one big win' will sort every out and that this miracle is just around the corner.

I am considering whether a family member is a gambler. He doesn't gamble via betting shops etc. but does seem to think he can sort out money problems by the next big thing, that never happens. He seems to be living under some kind of delusion. Grateful for any feedback. I'm at my wits end. He's borrowed so much money from me and I've just discovered he owes others as well.

He's an addict. What you describe is classic. Steer well clear. Don't give him a penny more. And you might as well write off the money he's already had. He is unlikely to ever repay you.

I hope I can get him into recovery. Meeting him soon.

You can suggest therapy/counseling but it’s been my experience having dealt with a pathological gambler, that they will not accept help until they have hit rock bottom, and then, only if they want help.

He will not hit rock bottom if you all keep giving him money. That needs to stop immediately. All relatives should be told to stop enabling.

Don’t let him make his problem your problem.

And, yes, kiss the money you’ve already given him goodbye, and have that be a lesson learned.

I hope it gets better- at least for you. Addictions!!! Drugs, food, tele, you name it. Moderation at best.
