My ex boyfriend is checking up on me through a mutual friend, he told her he doesn’t want to talk to me to give me ‘false hope’ but I could contact him? How does that even make sense

Everything you've described - he's just a complete dick.

He's texting now because he thought you wouldn't be able to stop yourself from texting him (because he's arrogant). He's testing the water now after his encouragement to you via your friend failed.

Honestly he's an arse clown. His motivation is to big his ego up further by reassuring himself that you are devastated and missing him.

This is all about his ego. You haven't done what he thought you would do and that is text him. This has happened to me so many times in the past. The only way to react is to not react at all. Don't reply just get on with your life...what an idiot he is!

What he means is he wants you to contact him first so that he can say you've done all the chasing etc

He wants to seem like he cares about you when really well, he just wants to seem that way. Mostly to others.

He probably wants you to chase him too, for his ego. Don't start replying as he will only tell your friend (ect..) that you seem to be having a tough time letting him go.

Best bet is to delete and block but if you must reply 'ermm...fine, thanks....?' lol like basically - why what do you want? and hell reply 'oh just checking up as am worried about you' or something like that. And you reply 'don't worry about me, im grand. All the best, toodles' and then delete and block xD
