If your partner was slightly hard of hearing would you think it was of to make fun of them and say "it was only a few lighthearted comments"?

I meant ok, not of

No, making fun of disabilities is pretty nasty.

JackieBauer · 21/05/2019 14:56

Thank you, just needed confirmation. I had a cholosteatoma removed 3 years ago, not deaf enough for hearing aides but I do miss a few things.

No it's mean, not a nice thing to do at all and pretty insensitive.

SignedUpJust4This · 21/05/2019 16:11

For some reason people think deafness is fair game. Twats.

Musicalstatues · 21/05/2019 16:13

Depends what they’re saying really? I have a degree of hearing loss in both ears and dh takes the Mickey sometimes but it’s good humoured and doesn’t bother me - if it did bother me I would certainly expect him to stop.

If you feel unhappy then, no it's not right/ or banter.

edgen2019 · 21/05/2019 16:15

Deafness is no laughing matter, as I know from experience.

NoBaggyPants · 21/05/2019 16:16

It depends on context. Laughing together, ok. Laughing at you, not ok.

Thisnamechanger · 21/05/2019 16:16

I'm quite snippy with people who do this. Until two weeks ago when I had an operation, I had 50% hearing for most my life. SO many people, when told I was deaf said "pardon?" and then choked themselves laughing. 🙄

I usually just congratulated them on being to one millionth person to have made that joke. If DP did it would be very very annoying.

SnuggyBuggy · 21/05/2019 16:18

We have a bit of banter within my family because all my family start getting hearing loss at 50 but I'd never make fun of someone else.

I might nag my partner to get a hearing test.

RantyAnty · 22/05/2019 00:55

The amount of stupid rude things said to me over the years has been astounding.

You don't look deaf
you speak so well
ha ha how did you know what I said as in they don't really believe you're deaf
Nevermind, it doesn't matter
Oh I'm so sorry with the funeral look face
People getting huffy because they think you're ignoring them
