Hi..I am 50 in June and have booked a cruise going round the med for a week..I've never cruised before and never been on holiday on my own either..I wanted to do something different for my birthday so I booked it last year..now I am having second thoughts about whether to go or not..I've just paid the deposit and the balance needs to be paid next month. Has anyone been on a cruise on their own? Did you feel left out because you were yourself? I am usually a confident person but really don't know if I should go through with it on my own..any replies would be really helpful. Thanks

When I was 20 I went on holiday on my own (not a cruise), as soon as people realised I was on my own they bent over backwards to make sure I wasn't lonely. I made some very good friends that holiday.
Go and enjoy yourself!

Ooh, nice! It's only a week. Take a Kindle, worst case scenario you'll come back with a tan :)

Crimebustersofthesea · 06/02/2019 15:59

Definitely go. My mum and stepdad cruise all the time and have met loads of single people that they're now friends with. I've never been on a cruise but go away by myself every now and again, I remember the first time I got to the airport and nearly turned round and came home,so glad I didn't I had a fab time!

Most cruises have a solo cruisers meet up on the first day or so; it’s a really popular holiday for solo cruisers so if you want to mix with people, there will be plenty of people!

This sounds more encouraging...think I am just having a daft panicky moment..thanks for your replies guys

I know someone who went on a cruise solo a couple of years ago. She made some great friends and is actually going on another cruise with some of them again this year.

There is also groups on CruiseCritic you find your cruise line etc and then there is groups, they organise meet ups on board.

I am going on one with my DP in April (ever been on one) and if a solo traveler was sitting with us for dinner we would go out of our way to include them.

Just one tip, maybe take the casual dining option rather than the set times and tables option, just in case the people at your dinner table on the first night don't interest you, you can avoid them the next night!

Oh and most importantly, enjoy!

ChocOrCheese · 06/02/2019 17:22

I've never been solo, but all the cruises I have been on catered very well for solo travellers, and we have been sat with them before and happily chatted and included them. If I were ever to want to go on a solo holiday a cruise would be very high on my list - probably top of it.

Tattybear16 · 06/02/2019 17:25

Yes, it’s a fabulous holiday. Load of solo cruisers and plenty to do, and I was always made very welcome at activities, on excursions, in the bars and restaurants. Brilliant holiday, enjoy and I never once felt left out.

OP I have been on lots of cruises with husband and friends and I would definitely recommend you going. They have meet ups for single cruisers although to be honest I would rather just meet people more casually. I am now separated and am thinking of doing the same thing! Cruisers are a really friendly bunch on the whole. Go for it!!

Ootscoot · 06/02/2019 18:02

@Padamae

Can you tell me any of the groups please? PM if you’d rather!

I did travel with someone else but we decided to dine at a certain time each night in the main dining room and asked to be put on a large table every time we cruised
It was lovely as there was lots of fun and laughing over a really good meal. Met lots of single women.

I’ve joined some. Thank you
