How do you actually leave

I’m clueless about this because I’ve never before thought it would have come to this.
My wife and I are going to split, seems inevitable (long threads on here) and I will have to be the one to leave.
Practically how do you do it? Where do you go and how do you arrange it. Renting another flat will take a few weeks to arrange. Do I have the conversation then just hang round the spare room till the flats ready? How about finances before we actually sort things out - the rent for a flat will be a real struggle on top of the mortgage.
I can’t face a hotel for more than a couple of nights, and that’s too expensive anyway. Family not local so not an option for school/work etc
How do I go about actually leaving??

Do you have a friend you can stay with?

No one I could impose on for more than a night. And certainly not with space for my son as well

Have the conversation with her. Give her the option to move out, after all you do want to keep things as normal as possible for your son. If she insists on staying then she would have to cope financially on her own. She won't get any state help if she hasn't got your son and wont get help with the mortgage anyway.
If you are both named on the mortgage, you are jointly and severally responsible for paying it, so if she refuses then you'd have to pay the lot.
The house could be sold and then you'd both have the means to buy somewhere smaller?
Yes, move into a spare room until everything is sorted.
