Hey! Little girl
Comb your hair, fix your makeup
Soon he will open the door
Don't think because there's a ring on your finger
You needn't try anymore

For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
I'm warning you

Day after day
There are girls at the office
And men will always be men
Don't send him off with your hair still in curlers
You may not see him again

For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
He's almost here

Hey! Little girl
Better wear something pretty
Something you'd wear to go to the city and
Dim all the lights, pour the wine, start the music
Time to get ready for love

Dim all the lights, pour the wine, start the music
Time to get ready for love
Time to get ready
Time to get ready for love
Time to get ready
Time to get ready for love

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Makes me laugh every time I listen to it (I actually have it at home) but not in a good way. In a 'clap the hand over the mouth OMG I cannot believe anyone would write this' kind of a way.

It's from the sixties. It might not be politically correct but it's a cute song. It's a bit ridiculous to start analysing song lyrics.

iklboo · 05/01/2019 18:25

Well it's very of its time & period.

jessstan2 · 05/01/2019 18:28

Very old fashioned sentiments. I remember the song and the tune is pretty but, definitely out of date.

Another one is Dr Hook's, 'If Not You'. "Who's gonna patch my pants...", etc. Patch your own flipping pants! However, I liked it well enough back in the 1970s. Not that I wasn't feminist as a young girl but I didn't necessarily take song lyrics seriously.

I agree with Bombardier
I bet you're wondering if it's inappropriate for kids?!

QueenOfTheCroneAge · 05/01/2019 18:32

Yes, of its time and cute. Going through my head, now! Grin I remember a book my DM had on women's grooming etc; and boyfriends were called "your beau" Smile

I have an old housekeeping manual that states what a wife should do in preparation for a husband’s return home: clean children, apron off, fresh ribbon in hair, dinner and slippers ready. Must have been from the same era.

TherightsideofHERstory · 05/01/2019 18:33

I like this analysis souptonotes.com/does-this-song-offend-you/

QueenOfTheCroneAge · 05/01/2019 18:37

Oh. My lack of daily fresh ribbon was the cause of my EXH running off with the OW then? Lesson learned!

Arnoldthecat · 05/01/2019 18:46

Yes its a great Bert Bacharach tune isnt it (there were so many !) and whilst from a certain era,im not sure if it was meant to be taken seriously even then !

I think it does have a ring of truth about it though even today but maybe we need a male version !.

Its the sort of tune Bob Downe might include in his show because its so cheesy...

I'd like to hear covers of the song by various genre of bands - Sex pistols, Cradle of Filth, maybe a ska version... I can imagine Kate Bush doing a heart rending production of it....
