Will the morning after pill fail

Hello !

I took the morning after pill yesterday but I’m worried- since I think I’ve already ovulated, it wouldn’t work.

My first day of my last period was on the 1st December and it didn’t finish till the 4th December. I had a condum failure on the 18th December and took the MAP on the 19th.

What’s the likelihood I will get pregnant ? Have I already ovulated on the dates I’ve given you ?

It depends how long your cycle is. If it's 28 days then you will probably have ovulated on 14th (you ovulate 14 days before your period usually).
The MAP is pretty effective though so regardless of when you ovulate you should be ok. No one really knows 100% until your next period is due I guess!

Could you go to a sexual health clinic and get a coil fitted? It works as emergency contraception up to five days after sex (I think).

BSmart · 20/12/2018 13:03

I have thrush. Is getting the coil advisable when you have thrush ?

Ditto coil equiry or possible second map? I’m not sure if you can do that though so go check before.

Sunshineandflipflops · 20/12/2018 13:03

In my experience, having the coil fitted it not a pleasant experience and is a long term thing so not something to do 'just in case' when you've already taken the MAP.

BSmart · 20/12/2018 13:11

What do you suggest Sunshine. Do I just wait it out ?

Well that's what most people have to do when they have taken the MAP i guess. There is no way of knowing if it has worked until you get your period (or not) but I think it's very rare for it not to work if taken correctly.
I have only taken it once, years ago and I know that wait for your period is horrible. Do you have a 28 day cycle?

Sun. I have had one failed MAP- that’s what I’m anxious. I was on Cerazette des..... and I was told by my GP that it’s effective after two days. Though looking on the internet, it’s effective for 7 days ! I have had a coil fitted before but took loads of painkillers. It wasn’t too bad but I would rather go through that then go through another unplanned pregnancy.

Well I guess it would be a safer form of contraception going forward if you have one fitted and are desperate not to fall pregnant (assuming you have an exclusive partner of course). Maybe visit your gp and see what they say?

hellsbellsmelons · 20/12/2018 16:15

The implant is good as well.
Lasts 3 years and you don't have to remember to take a pill every day.
Although, again you should allow 7 days for it to be completely effective.
Please try not to worry.
You've done everything you can for now.
If your doc said 2 days then hopefully all will be OK and you took the MAP.

Which MAP did you take? Ulipristal is better at certain points in your cycle (rather than levongestrel). And you can take it up to 5 days after. Speak to your pharmacist/GP.

Hello !

Went to my local family clinic. The nurse reckoned the Levonelle would have still worked due to my ovulation timings. But, I thought, since I was there, I might as well have a coil fitted and I don’t agree with hormonal contraceptives.

Had it done now. Feel very relieved ! Fitting took 5 mins and I had very little discomfort.

I took the MAP on the Monday morning after having unprotected sed on the Saturday night. DD is coming up for 12 Blush

Hospitaldramafamily · 21/12/2018 13:04

I took the MAP 12 hours after condom fail and at day 12 in my cycle. DS is 8 months

Pigeonpies · 21/12/2018 13:26

One thing I never knew or was ever told by a health prof is that weighing over 11stone or BMI of over 25 reduces the effectiveness of some MAPs

When I was heavier, I did take the MAP and thankfully it was successful but I accidentally stumbled across this info on the NHS website

meddie · 21/12/2018 14:21

I took the MAP after a condom failure. She turned 29 this month. Wouldnt change her for the world but glad to hear you have got yourself sorted now.
