Anyone else feel really anxious on their period?

I hate it. Along with crying and anger which passes after a day. Hate having to be in the office on these days and think it shouldn’t be compulsory.

Just wanted to share and see if anyone felt the same.

My anxiety is triggered by something else these days (thanks menopause!) but the hormonal changes around periods can definitley make anxiety worse.

Have you spoken to your GP at all? Or just talked about alternative contraception? At one point I just told the GP I wanted to come off the contraceptive pill and she prescribed me the diaphragm. It actually worked really well for me. As effective as condoms but you can put it in before the action so no break in "the moment"

I don’t use any contraception so it’s just a natural reaction I think! Thank you for the suggestion x

I have looked into PMDD but have never got around to going to GP to discuss. But yes, OP- I don't have regular periods and yet can still tell when I will have one because I become desperately sad (as in suicidal ideation, crying, binge eating, doing nothing but working and sleeping, panic attacks) for 2-5 days before.
I have a leg injury so can't do even non-bearing exercise for a number of months and I am sure that had made it worse.

From my reading, it's very common, to some extent. But if it is stopping you from living your life normally then contact your GP (bit hypocritical from me but you should)

Please go to your gp as a first port of call. If they fob you off, ask to see another gp or be refered to a specialist.

This is not "just the way it is" and it sounds outside the usual mild symptoms that the majority of women experience. Having your period shouldn't be something that gets in the way of your day to day life - it really shouldn't, and I think it's weird that so many women are trained to just put up with it.

Also, if you are so badly affected that you think you shouldn't have to go to work, then go to your gp if not for yourself, for your coworkers. I used to have a line manager who was vile for a couple of days a month - weepy, short tempered, vindictive and savage. If it had turned out that she was happy to inflict that on us and had never bothered to see if there was anything that could reduce the symptoms, I would have been pretty pissed off.

I had similar. I now take a low dose of Prozac which has worked wonders at keeping me feeling level and calm all month without the huge high around ovulation and the massive pre-period crash. Go and see your GP. I really really didn’t want to take drugs, now I wish I’d done it years ago.

I get severe anxiety the week before my period ( I have an anxiety disorder anyway) hormones can have a terrible effect

Mich0027 · 14/12/2018 20:22

I was particularly bad after my period with anxiety but did experience it before too. I've recently started taking the mini pill to see if that helps. So far so good

Needadoughnut · 14/12/2018 20:23

I second looking into PMDD ... It could explain lots

Borelis · 14/12/2018 21:22

Yup :( lots of anxiety, generally weepy-ness etc

BringItOn88 · 14/12/2018 22:29

Me! My anxiety spirals the day before my period is due. It's awful
