I can't afford to leave

I want to separate from my husband but I don't think I can afford to. We have 2 children. I work part time but don't earn half as much as him.
Anyone been in this situation? I can't see a way out and it's making me depressed.

I think there are a lot of people in this situation if I'm honest, most likely reason that some choose to stay in a shit relationship I'd imagine Sad
That said if I was you I'd run the figures through the tax credits calculator & also look into what maintenance your husband would likely have to pay to give you a better idea of your monthly financial situation should you decide to leave.

As NoF said, run the figures and work out what your income would be with maintenance and benefits. Then assess a basic value of any capital you would be entitled to. That’s 50% of equity in the house, savings and pension. Don’t forget your are married and entitled to a share in his wealth. 50% is a basic guess. It is probably more but use that figure.

Calculate your living costs and see if you can live on your income. If not then you can decide to increase your income (go full time maybe) or live off some of the capital until your earnings improve. You might have short term pain for long term gain. It will be worth it.

Also hunt around for a good solicitor and any hidden assets / debts.

Good luck. Millions have women have done it on their own. You can take control. Start by running the figures. He is the one who will lose a lot.
