Sorry basic questions

But what steps should be taken to protect oneself when left on own with small kids?

Solicitor - what’s their role?
Mediator? What do they do?

What else?

It really depends on your personal context. If you're married, a home owner or tenant, uk resident, work or sahm/d etc. You could google family mediation if you didn't want to disclose these details here.
