Hi,

Can anyone advise please on the below.

My husband and i split last year and I started claiming single persons child tax credit. However as a way of paying maintenance to myself and daughter my husband contributed towards the usual bills ie mortgage, gas, electric and other bills etc. His name still remained on majority of the utlility bills and we kept it this way for ease and to cause minimal distress. I have since had a letter from the HMRC stating that they are carrying out a Examination on my tax credits as another adults name is linked to the address. I have to provide details of bank accounts and utlilty bills for 3 months. Does anyone know if it will be a problem when they see my husbands name on the utility bills and the fact a joint bank account is still in operation etc? Thank you.

Yes it will be. If suggest looking into what evidence you can provide to prove he doesnt live there.

My exW had something similar come through and I sent a statement saying we were living separately and sent them a copy of my tenancy agreement for the house I’d moved in to. It wasn’t a big issue.

I had to provide everything they asked for like payslips, online bank statements etc and utility bills in his name from his new address, and I wrote a letter explaining why the joint accounts were still active and exactly what he was contributing, and showed that I had started converting all the bills into my sole name. I don't know how much of that was required or whether I went overboard, but it worked. I was just 100% as honest as I could be even if it seemed weird.
