If your partner came home from work smelling strongly of smoke, not an ex smoker, and said that they thought someone had been smoking in the toilets at work but that nobody else could smell it, what would you think?

That they'd been smoking

Or that they had been in close proximity to a smoker. However, DH smoked for a while and it was clear it was him as it was on his skin, whereas working with a team of lads some of whom smoked when he didn't the smell wasn't the same level.

Either they were smoking or they were around a smoker. Everyone who comes out of my FILs house smells like cigarettes for example whether they're smokers themselves or not

Yeah I thought been sitting with someone smoking. I could be being silly but I just don't buy the someone smoking in the toilets at work. It sticks to your clothes but nobody else smelt it 🤷‍♀️ it sounds like a lie and I'm wondering why.

If he is lying why would he need to lie? Would you go mad at him if he had smoked?
If I’ve been in very close proximity to someone who is smoking, or if I’ve been in a house where someone smokes then my clothes smell of it a bit. If I smoke myself (on the very odd occasion) then my clothes stink of it

No it wouldn't bother me. He used to smoke occasionally when drinking but hasn't for a while I don't think.

I'd be more concerned that he had had a crap day.

I'd wonder why the bullshit story when he'd obviously spent some time in the company of someone who was smoking or had been smoking himself. Odd as fuck.
