Long forgotten friends PM me to brag - what is that about?

I apologise if this may sound like an idiotic question, I don't expect any responses or no need to take it seriously and tell me off. I've always been an introvert (with occasional extraverted tendencies) and thus am sometimes puzzled by other's behaviour.

I like to take care of my family, my looks and professional as well as educational achievements, but do it all for a personal sense of accomplishment and a better salary.

I've got many good friends but quite often I'm hearing from people I've not spoken to for 5-6 years and the conversation just seems like the other side typing up a personal advert.

"Hey what's up with you, I recently got engaged and now studying towards a PhD. Wedding is in October!"

I'm happy for them and open to carry on with the chat, but usually we exchange a few lines and then no word from them for another 5 years Hmm

Have you ever done this to someone and what was the purpose? Grin
