Long distance marriage

Hello

My husband was made redundant. The only job is about 500 miles from home with little opportunity to come home.

There are no opportunities for me there and we rely on two incomes for the family.

Does anyone have experience in making a long distance marriage work?

It's possible. DH and I spent the first 2 years of our marriage in different countries.

He had a tiny flat, I had a house. All annual leave planned to cross cover so we maximized time together. We skyped every night at the same time.

However it was hard - we had to learn how to be together, how to not just talk about the weather over skype and all sorts. And we didn't have children.

I worked in higher education I knew loads of people that had long distance relationships. There was also hardly any chance of them ever being together as such specialist roles. These are people obsessed with their subject, it's more a vocation. So in the week they would work literally all the hours known to humankind and then go home at the weekend. DH and I were very lucky, we lived in one county whilst we both commuted to Universities in other counties. It meant we moved somewhere where we had no links whatsoever.

He also travels abroad a lot and is not that contactable sometimes, it has never bothered me in the least. We are both quite self contained people if that makes sense. my sister and her husband lived apart for a few years and it never bothered her. I think for some people the strain is too much emotionally as well as the practical side.

I really like it when my DH goes off on his trips abroad because I like time alone. You personalities will dictate how you feel in your gut about this.
