sex to conceive a boy?

Hi,
dp and I are going away to conceive this weekend (!) and would sort of prefer a boy as we already have a dd. Do all the stories about doing it doggy style, only once, on the day you ovulate (rather than a bit before of after) have any truth in them at all?
Any advice?

2 boys conceived on day of ovulation or just before. Wasn't taking any notice of timings at that point. "Tried" for girls with the Shettles method and had girls - very early in cycle, lots of sex and then nothing in the 3 days before ovulation. I have a very regular cycle, so knew where I was. However part of me thinks it was just pot luck
There is the other school of thought which thinks timing has nothing to do with it and it's down to acidity (or not) of mucus You might be lucky this weekend - I have always got pregnant in the first month of trying and consider myself very lucky ... but very aware of never risking it now

Hi,

Thanks all for your advice. I don't mind at all if we have a dd or a ds, just a baby would be lovely. I think dp likes the idea of having a boy (and doing it doggy style ) but again wouldn't be at all disappointed with a dd.

And you're absolutely right beansprout, best way to conceive is just to have loads of sex on any day you could be near to ovulation(my cycle isn't regular unfortunately) so we did that over the weekend and will continue this week and then fingers crossed...

Come on baby...

Hi, there is a great book called "taking charge of your fertility", you can get it on Amazon. That tells you how to pinpoint ovulation even if your cycle is irregular, it also has a chapter on gender selection

fortyplus · 19/03/2007 13:09

beansprout - you will be at this, but both mine were conceived first time. Ds1 was born 27th Dec and we wanted an 18 month gap... ds2 born 7th July so 10 days over 18 months. It does happen - though I know we're very lucky.

skidaddle · 23/03/2007 08:37

Following on... have now done all the sex bit, sigh and am just waiting...

This is just out of interest really - did people notice any difference in early preg symptoms between girls and boys?

isn't it luck? Just to maybe encourage you Skidaddle I got PG first month i started to try - had a lot of sex (on honeymoon ) and had a boy ... however, lots of factors influence conception - don't put too much pressure on yourself ... go away and have a great sex filled, relaxed weekend and if you conceive great

I've been convinced every time that I was going to have a girl. As I'm now nearer 50 than 40 (and currently celibate) it looks like I'll have to settle for having had four gorgeous boys! The upside is, we passed all the clothes and toys down endlessly, which is very useful on a budget.

Funny to see this thread coming up again.

IIRC Skidaddle is due in Dec so must have worked.

fefy · 20/10/2007 20:18

Hello we already have too fab daughters so we want to have a boy this time we have just getting married and know we want to extent the family what are the best things too try and when is the best time to do it. please help as my husband is desperate to have a boy and I dont want to end up having a whole female football team before we have one.

PSCMUM · 20/10/2007 20:27

apparently the more heavy a drinker the dad is, the more likely you are to have a girl. This is borne out by my parents and all their mates, who were still crazy party animals for the first couple of kids (all of us girls) then calmed down once they got knackered from us girls, and had boys. Its hilarious - there are about 18 girls all sort of 25-30 yo, and then about 12 boys, all about 18-23/4 yo, in the kids of my parents and their mates.

Theory is totally made up btw, but my DH v enjoyed when we were trying for a girl!

eandh · 20/10/2007 20:28

i tried all the theories to have a boy (dh last in family line) and we ended up with
..............

2 girls

southeastastra · 20/10/2007 20:30

eat lots of meat

ninedragons · 21/10/2007 13:10

If the mother is a smoker at the time of conception (I'm not condoning anything here) she's statistically quite a bit more likely to conceive a girl, so if you want a boy and you smoke, quit well before you start trying.

skidaddle · 22/10/2007 08:18

how funny that this old thread has come up again - pleased to say that whatever we did it worked because baby boy is due in December

I was going to say the thing about smoking as well ninedragons. Think the main thing is that 'boy' sperm are weedier than girl sperm so if you want a boy you should have sex AT ovulation and not do anthing that might scare the little boy sperm off. Girl sperm however are much hardier and can survvive longer so smoking and other vices might not kill them off as easily. I'm sure a fertility expert will be along any moment to tell me how right I am

Lulumama · 22/10/2007 08:20

did you try the methods then? which ones?

skidaddle · 22/10/2007 08:38

lulu - we just had lots of sex around the time I thought I was ovulating (in positions that would ahem deposit sperm as close as possible to egg) but that was all.

Oh yes I remember something else I read (from evolutionary psychology)- that if you are a really attractive women, you are more likely to conceive girls, but if the father is very masculine (lots of testosterone, square jaw, broad shoulders, strong etc) then you are more likely to conceive a boy. I suppose if the woman is attractive and the man masculine you are equally likely to conceive either..?

OP posts:
Lulumama · 22/10/2007 08:40

well, something worked ! that evolutionary thing is bonkers !! we have one of each so we are both stunning !

skidaddle · 22/10/2007 08:43

well exactly lulu - whatever you have it reflects well on you - the secret of successful research!
