So my mum has found a pack of viagra, there's one gone, seems to be getting them on prescription monthly. Parents are not intimate anymore. Is there any explanation as to why my dad would be using these apart from an affair?

No it does not cause an erection it simply means you can get hard with the right stimulation either mental or physical.

It takes maybe an hour to kick in and wears off gradually after a few hours, but you are not erect for all that time only when you are stimulated same as with any normal bloke.
