Question about divorce

Sitting with a friend who's arse of a dh has called a day on the relationship and wants a divorce. He's started it all but is insisting on my friend to petition the divorce. What does this mean and why would he be insisting on this?

It costs £550 to lodge the petition with the court so maybe he's just being tight?

She should probably get legal advice re finances, children etc. Before taking any action.

Also he can play victim "I don't know why she want's a divorce, I never did anything wrong, she's having a midlife crises"?

I agree with pp. Sounds like he wants the divorce but her to pay for it.

Although she could call his bluff by making a claim for costs in her petition! (Am divorce lawyer)

He can NOT insist on anything or force you to apply for a divorce.

If he want's a divorce he should apply for it.

Who knows what is going through his head but it may not be financial. Some people have societal of family reasons why they don't want to be the person that 'pulls' the trigger. He may just be terrible with paperwork.

All I am saying is that a 'misunderstanding' at such an early stage can set the tone for the whole process and be hard to come back from.

When I did my divorce 6 years ago I asked that he pay towards the costs (as the split was due to his abusive behaviour). He admitted to his behaviour but stated he wasn't paying as he didn't want the divorce. So he didn't pay a penny. Has this now changed? Can the courts make the other party share costs now?

It depends what the judge decides watching which seems to be fairly random
